trying to install ubuntu

I put the CD in my laptop, booted, and the laptop booted off the CD. There was an Ubuntu loading screen and now it's just a black screen. Been like this for a few minutes.

Help?

edit: Alright, got an "X" in the middle of the screen now.
edit2: It said it couldn't detect my GFX card or some shit so I hit "continue"

it actually worked to install my hdd
so try it u've got nothin to lose

and are u trying to add ubuntu to another os or..?

Trying to get rid of Winblows (it's way too resource-intensive/bogged down on this machine... I'd reformat but I lost the manufacturer discs. This is a laptop) and replace it with Ubuntu.

Hmm, moar black screen.

i'm going to take this laptop to a shooting range, I fucking hate it, it is so fucking slow it can't even install fucking linux

fuck you averatec and your cheap-ass products... I coulda gotten an HP laptop for the same price with far better specs... god dammit.

edit: 3 years old this September, but it has ancient parts in it (AMD Sempron I THINK, some shitty S3 graphics "card", like 500MB of RAM cause it's integrated video, FUCKING SLOW)

Yeah, try Knoppix first, it boots from the CD so you don't need to install it on your hard drive. If Knoppix works you should be able to use other Linuxes.

Hurricane, ubuntu is cool but what are your system specs? Maybe you should first use Xubuntu (lighter version) and see if that helps you out.

I think you can put the cd in while windows is running and it will give you a prompt to install. but you should find a way to get the live cd working because your still going to be faced with that same graphics issue. try looking around the ubuntu forums for an answer.

on a side note, i just put ubuntu live cd onto my 1gig flash drive and can boot with that. loads way faster than reading from cd.

Wow, exactly what I did. If it has a low amount of RAM, go with the text version-install.

And you can format the drive....hmm, how did I format the drive? I know I did it...just can't remember.
