uninstall drivers, shut down, remove old card, install new one, power up, install updated drivers, reboot.

did i miss anything?

I heard I can expect to have to reinstall BF2 after I upgrade my card, is that true?

also, with this board, Asus P5N-E SLI nForce® 650i SLI
what problems, if any, should I expect?

Thanx for any info you guys post

that sounds correct.    bf2 should be fine, although the first time loading a map it will do the optimizing shaders thing.

I forgot to download new drivers (moving from 7800GT to G92 GTS) but it worked out fine. If you forget (which you obviously wont), worst case scenario is you have to plug back in your old card.

I never bothered to uninstall drivers, simply installed the new drivers on top. Also, at least in my case, no BF2 reinstall was needed.

I suggest we cut your legs off.

@Op, correct. Remember to plug in the power cord to the card as well.
@Nikola Bathory: Old drivers can conflict with new ones, you're better off deleting them.

Priceless. Way to "mod" a Pci-e -> AGP!

OP: Sounds about right, I switched from ATi to Nvidia yesterday by using these steps:

1. Uninstall drivers
2. Shut down
3. Replace old card with new card
4. Boot
5. Install drivers w. CD that came with the card
6. Reboot
7. Run Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all the remaining ATi-stüff
8. Download and install latest drivers from manufacturer's website
9. Play BF2 w. all high.

So, I bought an 8600GT for a ridiculously low price. So sue me! I'm not into building supadupa upscale-PC:s anyway. Bugdet ftw! Hell, it wins over the old X550GE any day!

There was a 512mb? Oh shi-! I got the Asus 8600GT w. 256DDR3 from Jimms

*googles* Oh man, the multitronic one would've been only roughly 20€ more. I'll never do impulse-purchases again!

512MB won't be a noticeable difference on a 8600GT anyway.

I'll have a SLI mobo so I can get another if I want after the 9-series blow the prices more ridiculously low.

what would be better.

One 8800GT 512MB

or

2 x 8600GT 512MB in SLI mode  ?

I am running an ASUS Nforce 650i

One 8800GT. You don't have to worry about driver support with one 8800GT and it is faster. Especially with AA+AF. Going SLi with anything less than 9600gt is not worth it.

Is that because of the 650i mainboard I have or just a general rule?

In general. 8600GT(S) SLi just can't keep up with the 8800GT. 8600GT(S) has only 32 SP and 8800GT is much faster with 112 SP. In comparison 8600 SLi has 64 SP vs 8800GT 112 SP. There are huge differences in memory bandwidth too and core architechture so 8800GT really pwns 8600 SLi.

Words of truth. Besides 2x 8600GT is not much cheaper than 1x 8800GT. I'm just building a budget computer, with some future-proof choices.

Yep 2 problems - you should have 2 vidoe cards on an SLI board (unless you cant afford them)....... and stick with the same drivers. Installing a new video card shouldnt really need updated drivers. (If you DO use newer drivers, KEEP THE OLD ONES JUST IN CASE THE NEW DRIVERS DONT WORK).

Have updated my drivers more than once only to find that the new drivers dont work properly and I no longer have my old drivers.......

Well yeah generally speaking new drivers ARE better than old ones..... but whats the point of having new drivers installed if they dont work????

And no - old drivers can be a real bitch to find and install (esp. the version that you are after).....
