During math class today I was working on some kind of binomial equation within probability and I suddenly realised "jeeeeeeeee what the fuck is the point of this?". I like math and I take it at a pretty challenging level so occasionally it's quite fun but there are a lot of times when I really can't be bothered to learn things that I'm absolutely positive will not help me in later life. For example... P(X=x)=nCr(p)^r(1-p)^r-1  (Feel free to correct me on this if it's wrong). I've already been accepted to study law at university next year so I'm sitting here thinking..WOW..what a waste of brain capacity. I could be sitting here learning about interesting things like multiple female g-spots or when EXACTLY not to piss a woman off but instead I'm learning about equations that will be long gone from my brain in about 3 months.

This is by no means a hate thread being judgmental to you math lovers out there. All I'm asking, especially the older generation on these forums, has math been beneficial to you in life? I'm not talking about basic math but rather about more complex problems involving calculus, trig, etc.

You'll find out if/when you take an engineering course. It really does apply. I hate talking about school shit though, so I'm gonna leave it at that.

Honestly, I was looking for answers for people who don't take those kind of degrees.

I'm not a fan of advanced maths either. I'm a motherfucking wizz at normal maths, like adding, multiplying as so on. I can work out simple Maths like how much money I have within seconds. I could never grasp algebra. Like I had a mental block that wouldn't let me learn useless things.

Well firstly, I think you've applied to uni in England right, is that where you got accepted? (which uni?)

If it is, you gotta keep your work up simply to get the grades you're predicted, some uni's will reject you if you don't. But yeah, I hear this a lot and I'm guessing the answer is no, unless you wanna study math at Uni. I had a lot of friends who took maths and further maths, they only did it because the courses they wanted to apply to all included continuing maths at uni, so further maths gives them an advantage over other applicants.

So the way I see it, unless your course heavily involves maths, other than it looking good on your CV, theres no real use for it.....unless your one of those people who believe in being all knowledgable n' all.

I have a degree in Marine biology, needless to say, my math A level didnt help.

I didn't even use my degree, I have gone into business ....but Uni was great just for the experience.

The math itself won´t help you much, however imo math is mostly about logic and that can help you anywhere.

From a guy with a math degree, yes, it's important.

I did A-Level maths, and I can honestly say I can't remember a single part of it.
Nothing, just the names of some of the subjects, like differentiation, integration, polynomialthingymajigs and quadratic equations.

And despite being told all this, if you ask me what 6x7 is, I have to bust out a calculator or get my fingers and toes out. Whereas my dad and granfather can multiple two four digit numbers in about 1.5 seconds.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Yea, it's 42. Did it in my head. (But checked it on a calculator!)

EDIT:

My ex has a maths degree, she got a 1st, she now teaches maths and she can't remember anything she ever did at university and never uses any of it.
Case closed?

I've been accepted doing law at Warwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Exeter..still waiting from Bristol.

Of course it's important now haha because I have to get my predicted grades..but since I take IB my exams are in less then a month so after that I'm going to make it my goal to forget all the IB math I ever learned. Haha

Your fee's are going to be insane for an international student, right? Or is there some EU law or something that makes it cheaper.

I'm half British, my dad is British, I hold a British passport, I lived in London for 6 years and I'm a British citizen haha believe me, they've all tried to stick the foreign fee status on my ass but I've fixed it with all of them. I even had to copy each page of mine AND my father's passport as proof. Stupid really but atleast I won't have to pay the extra £6000.

Really? I shouldn't consider Warwick or Birmingham? Warwick being by reputation academically the best.

You're opinion is really useful tbh. I live in Norway and it's hard to really get the "feel" for where I want to go.

Haha tbh you're right. I probably won't move back to Norvegia land unless I get a job with an international firm not bound exclusively to Norwegian law. I'll be doing British law which is more internationally recognised as opposed to Norwegian law which actually takes 6 years to compete!!

Well, I know no one who has gone to warwick, but it depends what kind of location you're looking for. Countryside and nice small towns? out of your choices Warwick is the clear choice.

Exeter and Birmingham are both shit locations, I've been to both places and have had friends who have actually gone to both of those Uni's, they hated it, 1 even dropped out because he hated the shit whole, that is Birmingham

Manchester and Bristol are on a par academically, both very good...Great city life and night life, it will be very intense. If you enjoy that kinda thing chose one of these 2 rather than Warwick.

I just say Bristol over Manchester because I prefer the city of Bristol, and you have all the nice beaches quite close by, which is a nice touch, I know loads of people at both uni's

Of course, don't completely listen to me, I'm just giving some advice on my experiences....different people like different things I guess
