Is a 17" screen too big for  carrying around at school? Or should I go for the extra Screen size?

I've got a 17.5" and yeah that's too big. I travel by train to college and I never get it out, it's too clunky.

Definately..

I have a 15" 4:3 for school now and that is close to too big for me already... I want an ultraportable when I get my own laptop... 13" max...

Not at all. I love my 17" Acer and I take it to school nearly every day.

17" compared to 15" is 5cm more. How would that make it too big?

Depends on what you classify as 'hefty'. 13" is proper portable, 15" understandable, but 17" to me is more the "occasional move".

depends on what you consider big, and yea 15' compared to a 17' doesn't seem like it would be much bigger but it is. and they usually weigh a ton more as well, have big power adapters, etc.

Get the smaller screen laptop, but then buy an extra LCD for when you are at home working on homework.  It will definitly be better than always carrying around a big laptop.

I take my laptop everywhere. It's 17" (HP dv9500) and it fits nicely in my backpack. It's a bit heavy but worth it imho. I can sweat the 7 or so pounds..lol

Well that's what I planned on av but the more i think about my current P4 7900GS machine the more tempting it is to be able to use the laptop for gaming too .... plus I found myself a dell outlet flogging the 17's with powerful vid. cards for relatively cheap ..... anyone actually have a machine with an 8600M GT? How hi9gh can you bump the settings in stuff like COD4 etc? I've heard it's a very good card but have absolutely NO experience with laptops.

I'd say yes. If you plan on doing lots of transportation, go with 15" or smaller.

Yeah i would say a 17'' is too big for traveling.
Maybe if you aren't carrying other things it would be fine.

I have a 15 inch laptop, and that by itself is not too heavy to carry around.  But when I have to go to school -- and I need to carry a textbook or two, good luck.  I don't have a laptop back big enough to carry the laptop, ac adapter, a textbook or two, and a notebook.  When I need to have all this, I am forced to travel to school with 2 bags.  One for the books, another for the laptop.  And let me tell you, that gets real heavy real fast.

Yeah well idk about books as the 6th form I'm going to use the laptops/a large wireless network for the majority or work but I should imaging there is a good chance I'll be carrying other books etc. around

Hahahahahahahahahahaha! No. Let's not get into this debate again. It's the ultimate in portability for its size. It's expensive. End of.
