problem is, ever since i had no icons on my desktop at all (including recycle bin), i set the background colour as grey, but now the dam WHOLE desktop is grey, and the wallpaper isn't showing, any help?

Have you tried disabling wallpaper and then setting the picture as wallpaper?
I have heard of some jpg's acting strange when using as a background. Convert it to bmp and try again?
