My PC keeps freezing!

I boot up, and then anything from 2 minutes to 2 hours later it freezes. Any songs that are playing start juddering and nothing responds except pressing and holding the power button.
It only started doing it yesterday and I haven't installed anything new!

Also, when I watch a film, it will freeze sometimes, but I can escape that and kill WMP.

I thought it might be my PC overheating, but it does it so quickly sometimes, and all the fans are still running.

Anyone got any ideas?

All my fans are running and I checked the heatsink on the CPU today, it's pretty secure.

Because when they overheat they dont work right so they can freeze up.

Post your specs

And try Everest to check your temps

When you downloaded, go to computer - then sensor

Well I've got Speedfan, All my temps seem to be running ok. I set it on auto fan speed and it hasn't locked up yet.

I've got a freaking degree in Computing and I don't know shit.

Well its not an overheating issue, re-format? I dont know, just doing flow diagrams at college on diagnostics for broken PC's

(From personal experience) I suspect it's the one thing that no-one ever suspects - your PSU - particularly if it's a cheap model or came with your case.

Might well be it. A faulty PSU can cause anything.

Ok, so far it might be:
Fan Speeds
Heat Sinks
RAM
Motherboard
PSU

I don't think it's an overheating problem as Speedfan didn't seem to help and I don't need to be doing anything particular for it to freeze
Memtest told me my RAM was okay after 12 passes!

How can I investigate the PSU/Motherboard issues?

A while ago my hard drive failed completely, I had to reinstall windows and lost everything. Might it also be the HD?
It has been making some wierd noises for the last couple of months. like if I scroll up and down a webpage with the mouse wheel the HD squeaks!

I've had to low-jack my old PC for the time being as it's pissing me off so much!

You can check your PSU 12v and 5v lines with a multi-meter - just poke the probes into a spare molex and make sure they're within the expected tolerances (5% either way).

The only real way to test the motherboard is to swap it out with a known-working one (preferably of the same make and model).

Could be HDD, but it's less likely than other components.
