Basically, I get that screen when I start up that says "blah blah not shutdown properly, do you want to start in safe mode/networking/last config/normally.

When I choose any of the safe mode: A list of some errors or something comes up (something about partition) and then it freezes

When I choose last config/normally, It just freezes and goes black

Is my hard drive fucked?

I didn't get the windows CD, so I had to use that recovery console. I tried doin CHKDSK but that didn't help, I dunno what to do now. Seems like the whole hard drive has fucked up or something.

Using laptop to post this

Sounds like maybe your boot sector has corrupt memory. Unfortunately is will need a reformat to fix.

Nvm, I can do a recovery thing. Had to press F11 etc.. i chose non-destructive recovery but hopefully it'll work so I don't have to do a proper destructive recovery and return the PC back to its 2004 fresh state with all my shit lost

So since 2004 you never made a backup of your system?

I tried to restore it to a backup but it failed

edit: And yes, I never really backed up my music etc.. oh well, my fault. Good thing that I won't lose my work though, that's backed up

noooo!  you can use the windows CD to boot into repair mode.  use 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' and the command prompt to rebuild the boot record.  Go here for all things recovery console -->  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

and you always have the option of putting your hard drive in another PC to get all of your data off.  a failed boot record does not mean all is lost!  if you hard drive is working, you can absolutely copy your data from it.

I tried fixing the boot in the recovery console and I remember using fixboot, it didn't work.

hmmm, try fixmbr (master boot record)  if all else fails, pull the drive and connect it to a working system.  btw, what is the exact error when you boot it up?
