Tried Google to no avail

My mom's Macbook won't stay connected to our wireless network. It WILL stay connected while using the PC, but as soon as she reboots it or turns it off, then starts up again, the Mac won't auto-connect to the network. If she clicks the AirPort icon then sure enough, there's the network. She clicks on it and it connects.

Basically, the Macbook won't auto-connect to the network when it reboots or when it wakes from sleep. Any ideas?

a lot of computers are like that. is the network encrypted? most won't auto connect to an unencrypted network. check that.

Yes it's encrypted. My Vista PC which has a 2 or 3 year old WiFi card always auto-connects. My mom's MacBook is barely 2 years old.

this is really bernie's area of expertise, so i can't offer much, but did you check the wifi settings? make sure the network is set as a default or trusted network, or something along those lines.

Nothing like that as far as I can tell. Guess I'll wait til the break of dawn in Europe for Bernie and kylef to find this thread.

I'm sure there is some option hidden somewhere to do it.

Considering i've never actually OWNED a mac.... I'm gonna give it a go, considering i'm the tech guy at school (And yes, i'm a student too, it pays my $10, 000 a year fees)

Start out with Apple –> System Preferences… and choose Network.

Location: Automatic
Show: Airport

Now select.... BY DEFAULT: Join Preferred Networks.

In the box below it should have the network your trying to connect to.... if not, add it with the plus sign.....

If it is there click edit, and make sure all your passwords and security is all set up accordingly to your WIFI router settings...

Reboot, and see if it works, if not... BERN!!!

Could be many, many things.

I work for Apple doing these sorts of repairs and see these everyday. Chances are if you put it onto another network it'll be fine, but that should be the first thing you try. If that works fine then try going over your network settings very carefully.

This makes me lol, because everyone always says Mac's are oh so much better for networking and etc.

Who says that?

Idiots, probably. Macs are significantly worse for networking. Using Microsoft Active Directory setups makes far more sense and the Mac permission scheme is very basic, except in 10.5, where it is a bit ropey and not tied directly to the UNIX permissions.

There's your problem!

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Comeon, you can't say that I don't usually behave in tech.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
