My first build was very successful and now my wife wants a new computer for business purposes. Can anyone suggest a good/cheap motherboard/processor combo?
Just business and no gaming at all?
Just the mobo and the processor?

Would probs be best of with a *Shudders* Dell */Shudders* If it's not for gaming.
They have some PC's for £400 ish that will do anything apart from gaming well.

Yeah, Dell is probably the best choice. Don't bother with even getting a dual core, you wouldn't need it.
When I read the thread title I was worried this was going to be about white out on the monitor

Should do well enough for web and word processing. Then go for the cheapest RAM/Case/Optical drive/HDD/etc you can find. It'll do fine. I use an Athlon XP 1600+ with 1GB RAM for web browsing and even some gaming. Works flawlessly. Not to mention DU...

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
With £400 (800$) you can build a descent gaming computer. Hell my computer dosent even cost that much.White-Fusion wrote:

Nature is a powerful force. Those who seek to subdue nature, never do so permanently.
Build an entire pc fit for gaming for £400 or $800 thenThe#1Spot wrote:

not only that but you can get a $4-500 dell that will work fine for most people (business software, internet) with a monitor and maybe even a printer if you check their specials.steelie34 wrote:

And freezer you're missing a PSU, OS and monitor which jumps the price quite a bit.
And that is?Locoloki wrote:

Well I haven't looked at Dell's prices, but I doubt you'd save much getting a single core. We have dual core Dells at work and they're quite good.TheAussieReaper wrote:

In any case, if you go with a stock standard Dell I'm sure it will be fine for Word and Excell etc. If it's for work though, I'd be more concerned about backing up data than what CPU to get.
Dell doesn't own the market, they own noobs.... build the PC yourself, that way you can trim out on all the shit they bundle.

Always biuld the PC yourself, don't be a n00b!

they dont have bad systems. imo they are pretty reliable, with good customer support. if you are talking about the software image that comes on the system when you first get it, then yes it sucks balls. you should always reformat/reinstall a new system. but at least you have all the software LEGALLY (freezer) on CD when you need it.B1GBUD wrote:

I beg to differ - look at their market share!B1GBUD wrote:

Dell has great computers if you want legal software, automatic installs (they're now even adding music to the computers for you, if you want it) and they do backups for you. And the warranty is awesome. While Dell may not be the cheapest for gaming, for work it is top of the market.

PS: Market share is #1 in the USA and Europe - possibly elsewhere as well, but that's what I know.
Why not consider a good cheap laptop..... some good stuff out there at the moment..

sorry but to me a computer is worthless with out a monitor to see what you are doing and a psu to power it up (i wouldn't power my fans with a psu out of a $50 case) and i'm not an idiot for not obtaining an illeagal copy of an OS.Freezer7Pro wrote:
This wasn't adding to the thread, it was the challenge to build a gaming computer for under $800. Just a computer, without monitor, and a cpeap PSU is often included with the case. And only idiots pay for OS'.jaymz9350 wrote:

Not everyone wants to go through the steps of building a PC, especially when it is just for basic things (and the OS needs to be legit).
And Dell does have a sizeable market share ... somethign like 27-28% ... do some research before making a post.

Yeah, what kind of an idiot would use legal software on a work PC...Freezer7Pro wrote:
