There have been a lot of grumblings about the US military's M4 carbine, and it is no secret that the Army has gone out looking for a replacement.  So far, the three top contenders for the replacement of the M4 are:

The HK 416:

The FN SCAR-L:
https://www.defense-update.com/images/SCAR_556.gif

And the HK XM8:

To this list comes the Bushmaster ACR (Adaptave Combat Rifle), formally known as the Magpul Masada:

Apparently, Magpul, without any kind of goverment money or assistance, had been trying to find a way to maximize performace from the M4/AR15 platform to wring the best rifle possible from it.  After years of research, one of the developers finally stated "The best way to improve the AR15 platform is to unscrew the front sight post and put a new weapon under it."  So, that is what they did.  And, after only 4 months of work, produced the prototype for the Magpul Masada:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/05/Magpul_masada_16fde.jpg

It was introduced at the 2007 SHOT Show to rave reviews.  It was a new creation, shamelessly borrowing whatever worked well from other platforms and intigrating all of these features onto a single rifle system.
Here is a link to a PDF file that compares the features of the Masada and some of its competitors:
http://www.magpul.com/pdfs/masadaback.pdf
Just before the 2008 SHOT Show, Magpul and Bushmaster anounced that Magpul was turning over production of the Masada to Bushmaster, where it would now be the Adaptave Combat Rifle (ACR):

Here are some videos of what this rifel system is capable of:

And here are the technical specs on the original Masada (again, a PDF):

I know there are those who prefer some of the other systems.  What do you think?

Active production of the XM8 (since it had already been slated to replace the M16/M4) had been halted, but it is still on the boards as a possibility.  The SCAR has seen some limited use by SOG units, but that is not standard issue, and Spec Ops units can change their minds fast.  The HK 416 has been the golden boy favorite by some people on this forum since its introduction on Futureweapons.

It was just on a couple nights back; yes, I saw it.  Hope it goes through.  It is painful being a SAW gunner!

(although, that trick pressing his finger against the bolt group was helped by the fact that the weapon had a piston system, not a direct gas system like the M4.  That sizzling water on the M4 hit the gas tube.

You can tell me much but if I were to pick a weapon, I'd pick the HKs over just about anything. I absolutely am a fan of HK

edit: I don't know much about the XM8, but the 416 is definately damn good.

When I was in Iraq most Special units I saw had the HK-416. It takes all the good features of the M-16 series and combines them with G- series from HK.

Also in 2001 the Marine Corps was looking at this as a replacement for the SAW(M-249) http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg20-e.htm But I guess it never got past the testing phase.

The Spec Ops community uses this as their SAW:

Okay, but why does it get your vote?  The charging handle is still in the same inconvient spot.  The whole reliability trick is due to the gas piston system that it has in place of the direct gas system of the M4; the ACR has the piston system too.

Plus, the ACR has a foldable, adjustable length buttstock with an adjustable cheekweld and can be fired while folded.
All of the ACR's controls are ambidextrous, even the mag release and bolt release.
The ACR can be rapidly converted to 6.8 SPC or 7.62x39 (okay, they have't made those systems yet, but they are designed and the ability in there.)
The ACR has a rapid barrel change so you can change length quickly.
The ACR is lighter.

The funny thing is, is that the XM-8 is based off a HK design http://world.guns.ru/assault/as61-e.htm it came from the  Alliant Techsystems / Heckler-Koch XM-29 SABR / OICW assault rifle http://world.guns.ru/assault/as40-e.htm

I was back there in '03.  All of the Special Forces guys we worked with were M4's and MP5s.  Granted, it has been a while.  And teh Masada was only created in '06.  Production is only now under way for sale later this year.  Time will tell what the various military and law enforcement communities think of it.

Admirable loyaty, but there are things wrong with the system.  They may not be SERIOUS or fatal flaws, but the system can stand to be improved upon.  Greatly.
