Dell are running a deal on the XPS 420
Q6600
2GB DDR2 800
256MB 8600GTS
640GB Hard Drive
I need advice on this, my budget is £625. I have considered a self build, but I have no idea about what to expect (Specs wise) by doing so. Please help, indeed I have not used karma today.

Edit: ...GB...MB... all small details

Dell seems to be unpopular, here is one from OCuk [£645] Is it good value?
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 2.80GHz Dual Core CPU
- AMD approved cooler
- Abit KN9 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- OcUK 2GB PC2-6400 CAS4 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit
- 250GB Western Digital 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive
- NVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card
- Samsung 20x DVD±RW Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Black)
- Black Sony Floppy Drive
- Antec NINE HUNDRED Gamers ATX Case
- Antec 550W Next Generation Power Supply

I don't want to impose myself, but that would be great. Actually 5 days karma prize for the best one. (just the box, no monitor etc.) Thanks for bearing with me.

I've bought 2 of those recently for relatives, they are not bad (assuming you do not get the default video)

Unfortunately they won't allow me to change the video card option.

Yeah, the 900 is not a must. That one looks good, It's just about if the 8800GTS fits or not. I'm not sure about its dimensions

mikeyb - the most important question you need to ask yourself is "will I be able to build this PC once I've got the parts?"

Have you any experience? Have you upgraded PC's? Are you practically skilled?

If so then a complete isn't all that difficult compared to say upgrading a video card - you just need to do a lot more plugging in the right cable/card/chip/module into the right socket.

But, let's face it, some people just shouldn't be let anywhere near the insides of a PC - are you one?

If so, I seriously suggest you get someone else to build it for you.

Ya my recomendation is take it to ur nearest (decent, not crappy chain electronics store) computer store and pay them the small amount ($30-$100 depending) for them to build it for u... my friend made the mistake of trying to build one himself with no prior knowledge... well lets just say he had to replace motherboard and PSU.

In saying that though, you have to start somewhere.

In the Dell the 256 8800 GTS is the old 90nm core NOT the new GTS so perfomance will be slower than the 8800 GT fro Overclockers... the GT is a very good card...

Lose the AMD go for a C2D the performance difference is just too great to ignore

Asus and Gigabyte do MBs that support both DDR2 and DDR3 for Upgrade at a later stage.....

I will see what I can come up with.... what budget we looking at??

And building it is just a matter of plugging it all together and we are always here to help ..

Generally speaking Dell dont make gaming PCs. Dell PCs are like HDD, CPU, onboard graphics and crap memory (like Generic 1GB DDR2 667Mhz).
Dell's market is the business community or large corporations where PCs are not required to make large graphical calculations (like complex games), and are replaced every 3 years or so.
Dell's components are also "proprietary" (ie you cant just go down to the local tech shop for a memory stick or video card - must be returned to Dell for upgrading/new hardware - requiring labour as well as new parts).
If on the other hand you are after a cheap business PC then by all means go Dell......
My advice is to custom build your own PC. That way you know what you have, and know what it can and cant do.......

And yeah that PC looks pretty cool - upgrade the processor to the X2 6400+, the PSU from 550W to at least a 750W and drop the floppy drive (you can keep it if you want, but I havent used a floppy drive in almost 7 years

I don't know how old the Dell you use is, but I can use whatever vidcard, RAM, etc... that the motherboard supports with no problems.  I think the only proprietary part is the power supply (if they even have proprietary PSU's anymore).

Here's the best I can do, only £3 over the budget, but including shipping and VAT.

https://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l310/stefanvdd/Ocuk.jpg

edit: you can always take an cheaper DVD-drive, so the total price will come to 625 exact. The coolermaster comes with two 120mm fans, so you don't need to buy those.
