- USA, how are we suppose to fix this problem?
Getting rid of trans fats is only part of the problem. Take a look at the ingredients of most processed foods. They all contain high fructose corn syrup. That would go a long way in preventing obesity as well. However, we continue to provide heavy subsidies, especially for corn farmers. Unfortunately, most of that money goes to large farming conglomerates, which are also owned or part of large corporations. That means that getting it out of food would be difficult, if not impossible, without federal mandate. However, the Republicans/Conservatives would simply label this a left wing, tree hugging, socialist, Democratic agenda and interference.
As for retirees, that program has no chance of survival if two things don't happen. First we need to get the federal government to stop tapping those resources. That money should be for SSI, and related programs, and should not be allowed to be touched for any other purpose. The second is that we can't continue to look at the answer as more people. That simply exacerbates the problem and continues to make the problem ongoing and worse. We need a work force that earns a better living, since taxes are paid as a % of income. We may need to increase the cap on the wages to which SSI is paid. Right now it's around $93K, and after that no SSI taxes are paid. We may need to raise that upwards of $100K.
As for the education problem, that is something that is going to take tough love. I'm not saying that social programs do not have a place and purpose, but we have got to change the mindset that if I don't try hard and complete school, the government will take care of me. I would also much rather see a situation where universal college education was available before socialized health care. Make sure that everyone has the opportunity to attend college and get an education to succeed. I believe that would do far more good than simply providing health care for everyone. However, health care costs still need to be contained. At the rate it's going, even those gainfully employed will no longer be able to afford insurance, or their employers won't and will be forced to drop their plans to stay in business.
As for illegal immigration, that has to change. I would propose that those here already would be supplied with the tax ID number that the government currently uses. As long as they stay employed and do not commit felony crimes, they are allowed to work here. However, they are not entitled to any social services. If they want full citizenship, they must return to their country of origin and proceed through the normal process. We must also start enforcing the standards of past citizenship requirements that immigrants must pass a test regarding the functionality of the US government, and have at least a rudimentary understanding of English; all official government business not related to immigration should be in English. If you don't understand English enough to read these government documents, you don't qualify to be part of the US citizenry.

I do agree with your second comment, if someone is obese they are the only ones who can muster up the ambition to lose the weight, or someone can motivate them. But, I believe the problem for obesity ALSO lies in the food corporations hands.
THEY are the ones making poisonous foods, and drinks that have addictive agents in them for the obese to consume, without any warning of the health risks of consuming that food.
Edit: the food industry may make bad food but they're not forcing anyone to eat it

That's not completely true. Read my post. Everything has high fructose corn syrup in it. You can't escape it, even when you try to eat healthy.clogar wrote:

This is the governments problem, with the socialist education system that the government set-up, it just collapsed on itself just like most socialist programs.Im_Dooomed wrote:

i don't think produce and stuff has high fructose corn syrup in it, i'm pretty sure none of the basic foods (meat, bread, vegetables etc) have high fructose corn syrup in them... though i could be wrong i'm not a food expert.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

I'm spending my time on the internet talking about it. I know that with my pack of Mentos and Six pack of Jolt cola I'm solving the common problems which are keeping the common man down.

No, raw fruits and vegetables don't have it, but you might be surprised at how many breads do. If it comes in a can or package of some kind, you would really be surprised at the ingredients, and just how often high fructose corn syrup appears as an ingredient.clogar wrote:

Ship them all to:

Tax fast food, subsidize health food.Im_Dooomed wrote:

Not that complicated really.
Well, I can avoid it pretty easily, but I do have to give up on a lot of foods I liked. Basically, the foods I eat now, if they require a sweetener, it'll be sugar cane. And, if you buy strictly organic foods, you will NEVER see corn syrup in it or food colorings, or artificial sweeteners or products.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

And to {M5}Sniper3, I haven't made the claim this is all the governments job. But, it would help if they can do something now wouldn't it?
Nature is a powerful force. Those who seek to subdue nature, never do so permanently.
That's why in 1992 Australia introduced compulsory superannuation so people could support themselves when they retired. It was a good step, but introduced 10 or so years too late, so only the later part of the baby boomer generation will see the real positive effects (of compounding).TheAussieReaper wrote:
Do you also have an "aging population" in the sense that the baby boom was about 50-60 years ago (around the end of WW2) and are about to have massive retirements due to old age effect the country?
There's about to be a bigger strain on the economy as they leave the work force and then require the younger generations to support them, through health care, etc.
It's a problem facing Australia at the moment, and is only going to get worse imo.
This illustrates why "non-socialists" are deluded in there thinking that anyone can make it rich just by working harder. Can you seriously say that the top 1% of people work 1520 times harder then the bottom 40% of people, Or that Bill Gates works ~ 32000+ times as hard as the average American.Marinejuana wrote:
"In the United States at the end of 2001, 10% of the population owned 71% of the wealth, and the top 1% controlled 38%. On the other hand, the bottom 40% owned less than 1% of the nation's wealth."
The simple truth is, money makes money, a salary or income is inconsequential to people who already have money and can invest. Someone with a million dollars can invest in government Bonds and get a salary (by doing nothing) almost twice that of the average American working a 40 hour week. The system in place helps keep the rich wealthy and the poor struggling no matter how hard they work. Busting your guts and working 2 full time jobs a week will never be enough to pull you out of the middle class. And for those who can't afford and education or have to work 2 jobs to support a family so have no time to get one or too sick to do anything, are going to be forever stuck in relative poverty.
I don't know how its calculated in America, but in Australia, to be unemployed means you are of working age (15+) and actively seeking work.Im_Dooomed wrote:
That maybe, and I also think its a question for the person who doesn't have a job, "Why don't you get a job you lazy bastard?"Varegg wrote:
And why are they unemployed, now that's a question for your local congressman ...
But, who counts as an unemployed person? Just, ANYBODY of a certain age? Or, do they count only those who are able-bodied? For example, do they count obese people who can't even walk? Or, crippled veterans who get no aid from the government?
Free health care. For general check ups, emergency procedures and non cosmetic procedures, health care should be freely available to all.Im_Dooomed wrote:

Remove unhealthy foods from canteens in Schools. Have a maximum fat content allowed in foods. Ban fast food advertising or require them to inform the public of the health effect (ie. smoking). Have a 'fat' tax on foods. But most of all, it must be a cultural change, and people must be more willing to eat healthy and exercise more.Im_Dooomed wrote:

Free Education to at least 12th grade. Subsidies University education. Overhaul the education system and increase the quality of learning in schools.Im_Dooomed wrote:

This is tied directly to economic conditions, lowering interest rates to increase business investment will increase employment, but will also have a negative effect on the dollar and trade balances (especially with China).Im_Dooomed wrote:

Increase border security. Fine any business who hires or uses illegal immigrants. Mass deportation of those already there. Make English the official language of America and require at least a basic understanding before you can legally immigrate.Im_Dooomed wrote:

Natural selection
have them battle each other on reality television to see who gets health insurance coverage and/or money, and let americans bet on it.
that's pretty much my solution to everything
that's pretty much my solution to everything
And pug what the fuck does this mean? You want to know what I do? I sell a medical product out of japan that ionize's water and makes it alkaline for people to drink. THIS IN TURN, reducing the ACID in our bodies by flushing it with alkaline water. THUS helps the body heal disease or ailments, cancer and arthritis, acid reflux, just about ANYTHING associated with acidic problems. AND it helps the cells of the body SHED fat. The cells build a layer of fat to protect themselves against a more acid environment. When the body becomes more alkaline and neutral, the cells SHED that fat. THUS people lose weight.Pug wrote:

And, do you want to know what my brother does? He is fighting the GE (Genetically engineered) food corporations like Monsanto, which, is a whole story in itself.
So, what do YOU do again? And, if you WEREN'T suggesting that I do nothing to help (Which I assumed) then I'm sorry for sounding like an ass.
