- Belgian Government, Banks to Pay Holocaust Survivors $170M
Germany should pay, why Belgium? It was the Germans that brought up the whole idea
Also, why now? Shouldn't shit like this have been sorted out decades ago?

Pisses me off how they milk the Holocaust so much. Jews accounted for about half of the people killed in Extermination camps
"Last year, Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt apologized for Belgian authorities' involvement in the deportation of Jews to Nazi extermination camps."Mek-Izzle wrote:

Nazi Germany played the biggest role but some native governments/companies aren't clean either.
like our Railway which deported Dutch Jews for the Germans.

Really? I guess none of the companies using these people as slave labor exist either? Or were absorbed by other companies? I thought that's why German companies were paying the survivors?AutralianChainsaw wrote:

I guess all that was taken in Belgium during WWII didn't just disappear in a puff of smoke?
And while we're talking about this, did Swiss banks ever pay anything? If I recall correctly, that's where the money went...
Edit: Spelling

is that your final solution?
Unless these reparations are only paid directly to survivors or their children (not grandchildren and onward), this opens a new can of worms for other groups to claim reparations for past wrongs that didn't effect them directly. A lot of atrocities have been committed within recorded, and what could relatively be considered recent history. How far back do we go?
Hungarian Jews called to register for class action
by Anna Byström
February 13, 2008 08:00 am | Peter Wolz, who describes himself as an attorney for Jewish survivors of Auschwitz and their heirs, is appealing for Hungarian victims of the death camps and their heirs to contacts him over a possible class action.
Düsseldorf-based Wolz says he has already filed a class action for $40 billion against the US government at the Federal District court of Colombia, in Washington DC. The class action concerns the failure of the Allies to bomb the railway bridges between Hungary and Auschwitz during the Second World War. Wolz believes the bombing of the railway bridges could have saved more than 400,000 Hungarian Jews life during 1944. He put the number of Budapest Jews who escaped the Holocaust – people like financier George Soros and the late Congressman Tom Lantos – at about 120,000 only.
“The responsible Federal judge drew a summons, which was delivered to President George W Bush,” Wolz told The Budapest Sun via email.
“In his reply the President declared, ‘The US accepts the well-pled allegations of the complaint as true,’” the attorney claimed.
Wolz’s call for Hungarian survivors and heirs to register with his IPAS (international project group Auschwitz Sammelklagen (class action)), organization, for either further punitive class actions at US Federal Courts, or for settlement out of court, follows Bush’s visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Israel this January.

Do you feel responsible for this? Are you ready to pay for this?

Why is it that Fox News has this 'news' while none of the major Belgian newspapers/channels are reporting about this?
And why did you make a thread for this? It doesn't surprise me really. Of course there will be people trying to exploit this system but the overall majority are just claims and I think these families deserve the money considering the amount of suffering they went through. Yes, Belgium had collaborators but not as bad as the Vichy regime in France. The nazis found support on both sides of the linguistic border. In Wallonia Léon Degrelle and his Rex party were fiercely in favor of nazism and in Flanders many people saw nazism as the way to discard the yoke of francophone oppression.
I understand why our government surrendered to Germany after a few weeks because the First World War was only 20 years ago at that time and it had completely ravaged Flanders. They wanted to avoid that. But there is no justification for the cooperation of some after the capitulation. Therefore I think this gesture is just.

Hold on, the articles are popping up right now on newspaper sites. I'll see what they have to say.
Edit: well not much more than the BBC link has to say. Some people are apparently disappointed because they expected higher compensations. 110 million euros were put aside to pay the damage claims but only 30 per cent of that amount had to be distributed. The other 70 million euros go to the trust fund of Judaism of Belgium.

People/organisations/governments who haven't done anything wrong paying other people back for possessions most of these people never owned in the first place leans more to injustice.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

Personally I think it's a little distasteful. Bordering on disgusting.
