Alright, so I'm thinking about getting a Thermalright HR-03 Pro for my 8800GTX, and put a 92mm fan on it. Question is, how is the fan speed controlled for a normal 92mm fan? Are there any 92mm fans that go into fan headers (the one on the card) and are sped up/down same way as the stock one?

Or do I need some kind of speed setting hardware?

You plug the fan into your motherboard, download speedfan and adjust from there.

Which plug on the mobo?

Assuming it's not a molex powered fan. I have a 3pin fan header on my mobo called "Sys_fan1" right next to the PCI-E slot.

no need. A 92mm fan is silent enough to run it at 100% all the time

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Yes but will it deliver enough cooling? I would tie-wrap a 120mm fan under it and still control te speeds.

My 88GT has a 80mm fan. 30* on idle.

should be way enough. I could easily keep my x1900xt cool on that cooler with a 92mm fan. That cooler + 120mm fan (which will mount easily with a couple of zip ties) will be be enough for a 8800

No. Maybe if it's a super-low RPM fan, but not a standard fan.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

a decent quality fan should be inaudible against the other fans. No need to get a high-flow fan

What flow, it's a naked fan, air goes all directions. Only cooler with airflow that fits a 8800GTX is the new CM Coolviva.

A normal 92mm would make quite a lot of noise by the pure airflow over the heatsink. (Normal being about 2000RPM).

So, 120mm or 92mm? I plan and overclocking the shit out of it, so 120mm I guess?

If you happen to like 59dB fans, yes.

This one caught my attention

http://kisildalur.is/?p=2&id=511

And the huge one above wouldn't fit. Just the 8800GTX, HR-03 plus and a standard sized 120mm fan will leave just enough space for my sound card

If you plug a fan using the 3-pin connector in to the motherboard directly you will be able to control it without having to open the case and adjust it manually, if there even is a switcher. Thankfully, this can be done on most molex-connected fans now as well. Speedfan (see: great software thread that is stickied in this section) is a handy tool and as far as I know you can control fan speeds there.

Hope this helps!

The one I'm looking at says:

Features:
• Universal connection cable (3-pin as well as 4-pin plus separate signal line for fan speed monitoring)

my old fan on my cpu was 57db on full blast and i would run it at that all the time till it seized.

How the hell could you even survive that? My CPU fan is (Was, it's worn out now) around 15dB on lowest. If I'd crank it to max it'd be about 27, and I founc that too loud...
