I have to right a 10 page paper dealing with 1st ammendment issues in american history. The 1st ammendment part doesn't have to be the main focus, but should be part of the thesis. I'm thinking about doing it about the events preceding U.S. entry into WW2, and how FDR shifted the U.S. public opinion in favor of the war. I could include Lend Lease (i read it was intended to draw the U.S. into the war because it could provoke Germany) and Pearlharbor (i've read about how FDR planned to provoke the Japanese into agression). I could also include how FDR violated 1st ammendment rights in trying to sell the war.  I'm not sure if this is a good topic though, because I can't say FDR got the U.S. into the war by playing dirty:other nations declared war on the U.S first.
Any suggestions for an argument or a different topic(but in the same time period)?

edit: topic has to be from 1700 to 1970

1st amendment rights regarding son of sam. In short, the Son of Sam laws established (in 1957/8?) that a criminal can not profit from intellectual property while in prison. California has since revoked the law as of 2001/2002 I think.

Just one circumstance.

You can also talk about federal gag orders placed on women in the early 19th century (1800-1850) in antebellum America regarding women speaking out against slavery and for African American/Women's rights.
