Panasonic Lumix FX 12. Lovely little camera, at about your price. 2.5 in screen, 7.2 megapixel, easy to use, compact. Brilliant result.

That sounds like the majority of point and shoot cameras out there now.

Take about 4 or maximum of 5 MegaPix. Thats fine !

Yes indeed. But some are better than others and I'm hoping that some of the readers here own/or have used some cameras worth suggesting seeing as buying a camera is a bit of a long term investment.

I use a DSLR.. not exactly compact.

Dont get dragged into the megapixel crap...

Unless you are blowing it up to make wall murals then 5-7 mp is great detail

I bought a Panasonic lumix model about 2 years ago and it cost me $299. I couldn't be happier with it, image stabilization 10x optical zoom, etc. Good quality pics and this camera is 2 years old, the new lumix models are even better.

Lol, you still need a tripod for longer exposures and whatnot, but image stabilization makes most of your casual shots keepers. I purchased an sd1000 at the begining of last year and most of my low lighting indoor shots were just rubbish(I only use natural lighting). I ended up replacing that with a powershot s5 is and let me tell you, that image stabilization works wonders.
