What's the best program for password protecting certain folders in WinXP?

Answer: Windows XP.

   1. Select the folder you wish to encrypt.
   2. Right-click the folder and click Properties.
   3. Click the Advanced button.
   4. Check "Encrypt contents to secure data" option.
   5. Click Apply and then OK.

Better yet, get all the porn off your computer.

If you're using XP Home, you will need TweakUI to enable encryption.

Just stick it in a .rar file and name it something unrelated. No thumbnails and no one will ever guess.

Only downside is you have to decompress a file to view it again.

Well, as far as the encryption in XP goes, I'm not sure if that will work.

I only have one account on this PC, mine, it's just incase I leave my PC on, so I need it to ask for password everytime I access.

I have heard good things about Folder Lock Box.

Here's one of many links to it:

I downloaded it but haven't installed it yet as I don't yet have a need to hide my porn.

Errr, just make the folder "hidden" and move it to the C:\windows folder...No one will look for it there, a bit of a hassle each time you wanna fap, but prolly not worst than pass protecting it.

by the far the best program for protecting files and folders is called TrueCrypt.  The nice thing about this is that you create a virtual "partition" and mount it as a new file system when you need access to it.  You can mount the file, copy data to it, and then dismount the file.  Even if other people have access to the encrypted file, they can't open it without the password.  You can also copy and paste the encrypted file to any other computer.  This makes it much more portable than bitlocker.  Basically you can create the encrypted folder on one computer, move it to another computer regardless of the OS it has, and use it with the same encryption there as well.  You can also select an encryption level far beyond anything Windows offers.

I use it often and it has never failed.  You can even encrypt USB keys, which is a really nice feature.  It is a bit technical, but the help file explains everything.  You shouldn't have any problems.

@ bigbud,  you beat me to it!

the first one isnt really protecting access... its just a way of hiding it.  the second option won't work if another administrator takes ownership and resets the permissions.  using encryption software guarantees privacy.  the file cannot be unlocked without the password, and if you make a password long and complex enough, it would take years to crack.

You also could make it ask for a password everytime the screensaver is running.

Why not keep all that your important stuff on a usb. You can hide it anywhere and take it with you when you leave your room. USB's are pretty cheap and can hold a lot of stuff. And if you lose your pc in a crash, you keep the important information backed up on your usb.

What I do with my pr0ns.

Yea, not really foolproof, but it would thwart most casual snoopers.  Tried TrueCrypt and liked it.  Thx for the tip.

Or the simple way...right-click your desktop, open properties, change your screensaver to come on after 1 minute, and finally-check the box that says On resume, display Welcome Screen. Make sure your user account is pw protected and boom...this way no one needs to question the name of the folder name or why it happens to be password protected.
