I searched for "BF2 and Vista", and I found like 70 threads. So, here's hoping I can get a clear answer.

Whenever I try to play BF2 on Vista (Home Premium 64-bit), I always CTD when I try to join a server. Has anyone else with Vista 64-bit experienced this? How can I fix it?

How could you give up on playing BF2?

If I had to I would format and install XP to be able to play BF2.

Make sure you run it as administrator. Or just disable UAC completely.

Yea try what nessie09 said, I disabled UAC anyway as it bugs me a lot and isn't useful at all. And make sure you run it as an admin.

I'm running XP 32bit and I had the same problem a few months back. I tried everything. I ended up having to reinstall.

I disabled UAC (user account control) as soon as I got Vista... (of course)...not that have not confirm playing bf2 will effect it crashing in any way at all.

Running as administrator only works SOMETIMES if you are not already an administrator; I'm pretty sure most people here have their own computers with one user account - therefore admin.

Even so, running as administrator doesn't work anyway.

Try reinstall Punkbuster and have it updated.... thats since 1.4 the most likely cause for ctd i think

Holy hell, could it be? http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49222

Hmm, right-click on the icon for BF2, select 'Properties', change +fullscreen 1 to +fullscreen 0 in the 'Target' box. Load up the game and come back with what ya got.

You may get an error message about Line: 234 and some video resolution.

Recently, I got a new HP DV9000 laptop with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and tried installing BF2, followed loads of websites on how to fix, no solution. I'm getting Vista Home Premium 32-bit next week to try it. I think the problem lies with the video card (Nvidia GeForce 8600M)/monitor. BF2's only made to work on 60Hz, from EA Support, my monitor is outputting 59Hz.

Solution? (doesn't work for me, but who's to say it won't help you? )

"I think I may have found the issue out on another board.
Run EAsyInfo, find out what refresh rate your monitor is at.
If its at anything other than 60hz (Like mine is 59) the game won't run.

One solution was posted at http://forums.techguy.org/games/622862- … sta-2.html
This website :

You are not going to believe how easy this is. Go to "My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default" and open "video.con" using Notepad. Find the section that shows the screen size and refresh rate. Simply change the refresh rate to match your computer and save the file. I don't believe that the screen size can be changed. I tried and it wouldn't launch. Tell your friends. Post this everywhere. I had a time trying to find out why I couldn't play BF2 on my brand new laptop.

I tried it, still didn't work for me. But I figured you could give it a try if you wanted."

The OP actually managed to get BF2 to work in the last post. Bugfield 2 and Vista is a nightmare.

-------
There are numerous problems people have with Vista and BF2.

-PB kicks for inadequate O/S privileges (solution=Run as Administrator)

-Game loads up, black screen, back to desktop with no message. (solution=run BF2 in a window and change Video.con file in My Docs Battlefield 2 folder)

-Lag (solution=more memory)

Actually not having to confirm it fixed everything for me.

I tried running it as admin, and everything else I had ever read...till some one mentioned turning off UAC.

I had the same problem with CTD's and right after turning it off it worked perfect with out even setting it to XP compatibility modes.

I'm not a programmer, and maybe it was coincidence...but it seemed a hell of a lot like the program having to hang while it waited for your conformation was causing problems.

Glad I don't have this problem... I bought and installed Windows Vista Home Premium x64 less than one week ago.  I've played hours of BF2 with no trouble.  One thing I did do was use the "+szx 1680 +szy 1050" command in the target shortcut to set BF2 to run at my monitor's native resolution.  Who knows, maybe that did the trick.
