During the 1800's when steam ships were common they would gather cow patties to use as fuel. They stored them in the hold below decks.

When salt water soaked the cow turds methane gas built up in the storage compartment, a worker would go down to the hold with a lantern to get some more fuel, the flame would ignite the methane and the whole ship would explode. Seamen quickly figured out what was going on and began storing the fuel above decks.
To make sure there was no confusion they labeled the boxes ' ship high in transit '. Which promptly was reduced to its acronym.
Shit.

Scholars trace the word back to Old Norse origin (skīta), and it is virtually certain that it was used in some form by preliterate Germanic tribes at the time of the Roman Empire. It was originally adopted into Old English as scitte, eventually morphing into Middle English schītte. The word may be further traced to Proto-Germanic *skit-, and ultimately to Proto-Indo-European *skheid-, ". Ancient Greek language had 'skor' (root 'skat-' from which modern Greek 'skatá'). The words 'skítur' (noun) and 'skíta' (verb), still exist in the Icelandic language today, and in other Scandinavian languages variations of 'skit' are also often used.
So there you go, it dates back thousands of years to Proto-Indo-European languages. It's good to know that such words aren't modern inventions that old people frown upon, now I can give them a big fuck you

I have taken classes in "English Old to New", in which I learned about how the English language was formed. The word 'shit' is very old. See Me-Izzle's post above.

Just think of it... 3 wouldn't always equal 3... so 3+3 wouldn't always equal 6.

OH SHIT

And GS, math is awesome cause it just works. y=mx+b all the time. English (that is to say, studying literature, not the language itself) is far bitchier.

It's weird how Iranian, Indian and European languages all trace back to a single root.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-European_languages

Even the religion, culture etc.. of the three groups stem to a single one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Indo-Europeans

I'm gonna read more into this
