We've seen many threads on "Should I get Vista?" or "zomg Vista sucks", so I think it wouldn't be bad to have a Vista discussion thread.
If one already exists, stop reading and link me to the thread - kthx

  • Simpler interface, good overview
  • Microsoft has finally grown up
  • Improved media management
  • Better hardware overview
  • Searchbar
  • Visual effects such as hover over minimized window for preview
  • Alt-Tab with more overview
  • Much, much, much better security than XP
  • Bloated - you need good hardware
  • Some drivers aren't compatible yet
  • Some programs have bad compatibility
  • It hogs resources
  • It's bloated

If you want to add more points to this list, or disagree with them, post below, and I will make additions, and underline things that are controversial/people disagree with.

No it is, and is worth writing multiple times. XP is too bloated for my liking, but it's a damn sight better than Vista.

I just switched to Vista(x64) 2 days ago and i'm gona say I love it.  Its very responsive and run VERY fast from what I remember it being.  I wrote the Vista FAQ a while back so if you want more stuff to add.  Vista FAQ  I plan on updating in soon with SP1 and a lot of other stuff.  I also put in a order through newegg for 2GBs additional RAM so this OS is really going to fly now.    I have however had some issues with games but I also had the same issues with then on XP as well so its no Vista's fault.  Cheers!!!

Holy crap! I was expecting a lot more criticism. Where are the Vista haters when you actually want them?

I hate SP1, slows my PC down GREATLY!  I may format just to get rid of it. It made Crysis run even more poorly than it already does. (Now unplayable at previous Settings)

Well, Crysis runs 40% faster with SP1 and HD 3870 X2

I want to ask a question. Does Vista actually have more than Firewall for security. I mean, I have set a Home Network, and all the PCs and laptops and my PS3 can be connected to each other. Apart from this PC, which has Vista. I try to stream media to the PS3 or share it with other PC's and I can't get it to work. The only thing I use is Windows Firewall. So I am wondering if there is something else, that I need to allow in order to be able to share and stream media?

I don't really have anything bad to say about Vista.

Your definition of 'hogs resources' I think is a little flawed. Vista merely pages RAM and memory in advance so that when the kernel needs to access and use aforementioned memory, it can do so without any delay or interruption to the users own experience. Furthermore this function can actually be disabled... I do not see how it is a 'Con' or a negative functionality of the OS at all.

Also, just to add FYI, I have been a user of Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition for almost 6 months and have not experienced a single driver incompatibility. Don't know if that will add any credence or plausibility to the defense of poor 'ole Vista... but I myself love it .

i had my first vista fail moment yesterday.  after installing service pack 1, my headset stopped working.  i uninstalled the service pack, and they are now working again.  i guess that's more of a vendor issue than a vista issue, but why would a service pack mess that up?

Here is another one I just installed BF2 for the first time since installing Vista x64 now it won't play but for 5-30mins without crashing to desktop.  I installed BF2142 with the same exact result.  So I was like fine i'll just install Supreme Commander and play that for a little while.  Guess what... same thing.  Whats going on?  Last time I check Vista work with those games.

How do you uninstall SP1?

The only problem I have had with vista is that it cripples my x-fi card with 2142. For some reason I can't get my card to run on the highest setting, which sucks because their is a drastic difference to sound quality when setting it to ultra high.

Me either. Sure, I have some minor problems here and there, but nothing too bad.

The one thing that pisses me off though is that I can't play BF2 now for some reason.

really? I'm wondering why some are having problems with bf series but my bf2 and bf2142 couldn't work better.

They used to work...then I uninstalled. Recently I re-installed (I got some weird urge to play again) and now they don't work. The game crashes without an error message when I try to join a server.

I don't hate it per say (I can legally use any MS OS for $0). My system is more than capable of running it, I'm just not willing to accept the bloat and slower running games at this time. Also it does not work with the version of vmware ws im using. If someone likes it and enjoys it, I would never try to convince them otherwise.

I like Vista a lot, and since SP1 it's been blazing fast for me. When I see the login screen appear it already disappears again and I have my desktop. Also the startup and other apps load very fast, and I don't have compatibility issues. Running Ultimate x64 with 4GB of RAM, and it's faster than XP for me, which is bugged too.
I also don't get all the bloating accusations? I never encountered anything wrong with my Vista.
