Is HDD broken?

Tried installing windows on a maxtor 80gb ata hdd and it just freezes when loading drivers. Also tried another copy of windows and it still didn't work. Then i took the hdd out and put it in a external usb enclosure. It suddenly shows 5 partitions but i only had 2. Tried reformatting and it takes forever even though only 6gb is full (even tried quick formatting). I tried accessing a partition on it and its doesn't open it. Its accessing but nothing happens, its like its gonna take a day until ill be able to view files. So is the HDD broken?

maxtors are know to fail often... so maybe...

reformat does the whole disk, not just the occupied data blocks on it and that's why it takes so long.

If you have a different HD, around, try that one. Does it work then?

But if you put it on an usb-enclosure and you can't read files of it, you can be pretty sure the disk is broken.

(edit: you can try knoppix-> badblocks commando if you want to be sure)

I know it reformats the whole hdd (whole partition in my case). The partition "1"is 10gb big and only 100 mb are used and i can't access it.
