Getting rid of boot options.

Highly annoyed whenever I boot XP, I was looking through some blank discs and came across an XP install disk that had become defaced. I put it in and took it out as soon as I saw what it was, now whenever I boot my computer I get an option of booting with XP or XP installer. The annoying part is that it's default is set to XP installer, and the time until it auto chooses is 4 seconds, so unless you're like fucking lightening it's irritating.

The option comes up after POST BIOS, so about 15 seconds after I turn my computer on it's there, now for the sake of me just being able to boot my computer without me being there, how do I change this option?

If I leave it to run through to installer, I just get a loading screen for a minute then a failed to find file (Obviously because the disk isn't there...) then it prompts me to restart. Pretty please, help.

go into the bios and reset to defaults?

Otherwise put your HD as first bootable device so he skips the cdrom detection (don't forget to switch that back every time you want to boot from a cd)

If that doesn't help, put the installer in and close it correctly or try another bootable cd first.

I reset defaults in Bios, and I might try the CD again =/.

type c:\boot.ini from the run line. remove any lines other than the one that references your current install.

delete the line that is highlighted. you wont see boot options anymore

i figured.... see my edit ^^^

if you cant delete it from that window, just do what i said before by typing c:\boot.ini in your run line. when the file opens, just delete that whole line that is highlighted in that other window. save the file and no more boot prompts.

I'm really noobs at this sort of thing, I went to delete and save -- Read only. How can I change the file to not being Read only? Can't find the file in C:\

awsm, glad u fixed it... didnt check this until just now, so i'll post why you couldnt see it in case anyone else has this problem. the boot.ini file is a hidden system file on your c: drive, so it doesn't show up unless you set the options to view hidden files, and also to show protected system files. once you do that, you can right-click to get the properties of the file, and de-select the read only option. after that, you can modify it any way you want. but you can always access a hidden path or file if you know where it is, that's why i suggested just running it from the run line. you won't have to muck around with those hidden file settings.

the file itself is actually stored outside of your formatted volume... ever notice how when you format a new drive to install windows on it, it leaves around 8 MBs of free space? it stores the files windows needs to start before it can mount the ntfs volume, including the boot.ini, win.ini and some others. just a bit of knowledge for those who care.

I kinda/sorta followed this thread and got to the boot configuration file and deleted the Windows Vista option and saved it, and when I rebooted it still gave me the options of starting Vista or "Earlier Version of Windows". Do I need to delete the other boot option as well? (the one highlighted in my pic)
