well I've had my computer for over a year now and maybe time for an upgrade? what do you guys think

current specs:

Processor:    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory:    2030MB RAM
Hard Drive:    250 GB
Video Card:    NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO
Sound Card:    SigmaTel Audio
Operating System:    Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2

i'm looking for more ram, maybe an upgraded video card, and maybe even vista? I'm pretty happy with current setup, but i've gotten so much shit on my current comp it would be nice to start over with better quality hardware.  but the reason i get to consider this is because i jokingly told my dad i want to get a 1337 new gaming computer, assuming he'd say something along the lines of "buy it your god damned self" but instead he said "well i can consider it, let me know what you are thinking of later and we can talk". So now im researching options for a new gaming computer.

i dont want anything that is waaayy too pricey, but i also want to make it worth it, and for this to still be a decent rig for a few years to come.

so, that being said, i come to you tech section, and ask you: what would you do? ideas?

I have almost the same setup, but with a 6600 instead. I upgraded to an 8800GT a few days ago and it's rocking. Every game I've tried so far runs smoothly with all the video cranked up.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I agree.  That way, when Nehalem gets released, you can upgrade to that and still use the video card.  Nehalem boards use a different CPU socket, so a CPU upgrade would last only until you upgrade to Nehalem, whereas a graphics card upgrade could be used with Nehalem boards.

You will have to have ddr3 memory for the Nehalems. I presume you have ddr2 mobo now so buying 2 gigs of ddr2 would be a waste pf money.
GTS 92 is a good gfx card for the money.

i wouldn't upgrade anything except maybe the video card. just wait until you HAVE to upgrade. it'll be much more worth it then seeing as you'll hardly notice a difference if you were to upgrade now.
well if your dad's paying for it...

how much do you have to spend?

I'm telling ya, I have almost your exact same machine, but with an 8800GT 512. I play HL2:Ep2, COD4, BF2, BF2142, and GR:AW all on the highest settings with no troubles at all. Just get the video card. Crysis might still be a challenge, but everything else will be cake.

Yeah, the 8800GTS 512mb is the way to go if you aren't feeling mad enough to pay up for a GTX.

Shouldn't come out to over 650, either. 2 gigs of RAM is like sub-$100, the 8800 GTS 512 is like $250 now, and a quad core would be like $300 ($316 for the Q9450).

Well, over here it's $900 vs $600 USD, no idea what it is overseas.
