my DVD driver a ( HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA 4164B) isn't working 50 % of the time.

it doesn't read the DVD it and when I go to my computer it just sais E drive, no sign of a DVD.
sometimes it works and other times not.
I have already updated it with Microsoft Update.

thanks in advance

Did you open up your case and install any new hardware recently?  Maybe one of connectors is coming loose.

If this just started happening randomly, it's likely that the drive is dying.  There's not much you can do.  How old is it?  Do you use it much?

Well DVD drives are fairly simple - you just plug them in and go.  So other than the connectors coming loose, there's really nothing you can fix (there's no drivers, software, etc. for you to tinker with).  Fortunately, they're not very expensive.  Still, you must be unlucky because I've never had a CD or DVD drive fail on me.
