$150!  Well Fuck You Microsoft...
and that's just for the upgrade from the trial version!
And they wonder why people steal their software so often...

Since I have neither the means nor the desire to pay hundreds for a mediocre program, does anyone know of a freeware program capable of producing powerpoint presentations?

If it's that cheap on an online classified website...check ebay there's gotta be something for less than MS price.

Then why are you complaining?  It costs less than a video game and will probably end up being more useful.

1) I'm broke

2) I already paid for Vista and microsoft Works on this computer, I'm not giving more money to microsoft.

3) I don't intend to use the program all that often.

Then use the computer labs at school if you want MS PowerPoint.  Even in my poorest days in undergrad, I could still manage to fit in an extra day of work to get $60.  Priorities, I suppose.

Open Office should work.

Do you need to make a PPS, or just view one?  I'm pretty sure there are free programs that let you view PPS (like Windows Journal Viewer).

I wish I paid $50 for Office.

I need to make one.

Once the tax returns show up, I might go for the real deal (or rainbow 6 vegas), but open office seems to be working well enough.

edit: Open office can save in .ppt format, no need for the real deal   *waits for lawsuit*

Hint -

Look for a Microsoft Launch event and sign-up.  I got Office 2007 Professional, Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 all for free.  Easily $2500+ if I had to pay for them but all I did was attend the launches for the products.  You fill out a survey form and they mail you the software after the event.  Fully licensed versions that you own forever ain't too shabby for an afternoon of product demos with a free lunch.

There was one in 2007 to celebrate Vista, that's all I know of.

OP - that's not just for Powerpoint you know...right?
