If you have Verizon Fios and you try to hit a site that has a non-existent dns name, it shows their search results page. This is silly since you probably have your own preferences. Apparently there is some silly opt out process, but the link below details how to fix it (essentially changing your dns to servers that don't intercept).

Time Warner does this too.  I had to opt-out of it.

I have Verizon FiOS and I just tested this out on a madeup website.  I don't see the problem, so it comes up with a Verizon search page... who cares?  Is there something bad about that?  Not being sarcastic, I really don't know.

Some people have custom settings to handle bad URLs.  I have mine set to use a google search.

Extremely annoying seeings sometimes the sites actually work, it's just being retarded.

If I remember correctly, there is a really tiny link on the search page that appears where you can alter your preferences.  I can't find the original link I used to fix it for me.

Edit:  I found it.  Here.

it's not really bad per se, but it means verizon will control the auto-search results when you enter a bad dns name.  lets say for example you run a huge business that sells computers, and your website is established and indexed by the major search engines as a top return when people search for computers.  with verizon putting their own dns ahead of the major internet dns servers, anybody can pay verizon to make their website come out as a higher serach return than your already established business.  its kinda sketchy, because search results should be based on relevance, not on who pays the most.

It really is a matter personal preference. Most users out there probably don't care and I can see why they do it (cut down on support calls).
