Of course, everything changes when the government involved is theocratic and personal freedoms are a joke. Places like Saudi Arabia and Iran aren't exactly known for their social tolerance, so your assumptions are far more valid for Muslims in those countries rather than Muslims here. Although admittedly, Muslims in Europe seem to be distinctly less tolerant of gays despite living in free societies.

One thing Muslims are particularly good at is community. They are extremely family oriented. There is a unity among them that is often lacking among our general populace. I would think this is a positive trait we could learn to emulate more. In addition, many Muslims have a strong sense of compassion for the poor. Agreed... But I think the main issue with Iraq is the conflicts between ethnic groups. In Afghanistan, you have different tribes, but most of them are Sunni. In Iraq, there is a very old grudge between the Sunnis and the Shiites. We're pretty naive to think we can somehow end that feud. As long as that tension exists, we really have no power to permanently unify the people of Iraq. All that we are doing is postponing more war.ATG wrote:
