I'm really confused. I was going to get the 9600GT but then I saw the 8800Gt and I don't know what to get. What would you get?

XFX 9600 GT XXX

OR

XFX 8800GT XXX

???
Any help would be hugely appreciated and karma for those who assist.

btw: I have a thing for XFX so don't try and persuade me off of them. :p

8800 without a doubt... unless you just want close-to-similar performance for less money with the 9600.

Why? The 9600's a great card, its cooling is immensly better, its around 15% slower only.

15% is  a HUGE amount.

Anyway... Neither.

8800GTS > all.

If not, then the GT should do the trick.

Apparantly, the partners of nvidia are anoyed about the prices they basically are being forced to sell 9600s at.  There almost as expensive as an 8800 yet quite a bit slower.  For me, 9600s need to go down in price by atleast 20% to make them a good recommendation.

Why did they release a new card in the 9xxx series when it's slow than an 8xxx series card? I always thought as the years go by, the new products become better than the old ones. By the looks of it, Nvidia has wasted their money by making a 9600.

Nah, it's a mid range intended card in a new series. Basically it's in the same new core generation I believe this one is G94.. So technically it would replace the 8600 cards, but because nVidia has gone crazy on naming their cards for some reason they do replace the 8800GTS, but not the lower ones. So see this as a G9x core mid range card.. Which is a good performing thing but not in the right price class either.

Skip the 8800 and go for the 'mid' 9800's when they're out.

9600 is a very good card and it's got a very low price, but the 8800 GT outperforms it.

Not that such things really matter in this day and age. If you already have a decent video card keep it (or add another for SLI fun). On the other hand if you have an old rig that needs upgrading then I would recommend getting a new generation card. My rig (for example) is about 6months old, with my dual 8800GTS cards about 9months old. I wont be getting new video cards for at least a year (or possibly 18mnths), as I fail to see reasons why spend money on getting something new, when my current setup works as well 2day as it did 9mths ago.

Oh and I would recommend the 8800GT.
