The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. Some things one can decypher, like the weird alphabet-spouting woman symbolises romantic relationships. Notice how she tried to change him and after too much of this he "broke up" with her?
Then there's relationships with work and employers. He got too friendly with his boss and was yelled at and made to feel small.
Later he feels he feels ignored and finally at his death, (when he pulled off his mask and went through the window,) he examined his life and wanted to change everything.
It's a mind-job to try and decypher everything though. It's probably not even as simple as this but this was what me and my Sister managed to come up with.
Everyone who hasn't seen Ident doesn't know what the Hell I'm talking about.
Edit: Oh, the guy in the bowler hat is a missionary and symbolises religion, which this character rejects.
