So, I'm looking for a good Intel (obviously ) dual/quad CPU, a motherboard, and some DDR2 RAM to upgrade my computer.  Yep, pretty much an entire makeover.

Try to keep it under $500?

You start with $300, because I already have the video card picked out.  Go.

Oh, and overclocking is definitely going to happen, so include good overclocking CPUs and mobos.

Edit: Question: Is 800MHz pretty much the standard for DDR2 RAM now?!  Because I hadn't heard of 1066 before and Newegg doesn't seem to sell 800MHz RAM.

Edit2: I'm looking at LGA 775 quad-cores and I'm torn between the Q6600 and the Q9300.  Q9300 looks best to me, 45 nm vs 65 nm, which means lower heat and power consumption, and higher overclockability, right?  And the higher FSB: 1333 MHz vs 1066 MHz.  I do have a Zalman CNPS9500.

God, tech advances so fast.  Still in the DDR age.  Would that be a logical choice?

it would be wise to get a ddr3 mobo
but not necessarily the RAM just yet
better things will come

and pick up your friend g a new mobo
i heard his gigabyte is shit
maybe a new asus?....

$500 is tight impossible, because your GFX and CPU take up practically all of it.  If I were in your shoes, I'd get:

ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - $149.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache - $289.99
XFX PVT88PYDF4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB - $219.99
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $44.99

Total: $704.96

Sorry that it's overbudget, but I think it's worth it.  I'm assuming you have a case/PSU.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115037 - CPU - Intel E8400

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813128087 - Gigabyte P35 DS4

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820220174 - Patriot 2GB DDR2-800 (I have it, it RAWKS)

That should last you a good 2 years atleast.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115030 this cpu - $170
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115046 or the 8400 everyone seems to love - $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150252 gpu obvious choice - $220 ($190 after $30 MIR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227271 sick nasty RAM - $73 ($53 after $20 MIR)
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227139 the platinum ram with a slightly lower latency but lifetime warranty(i think you should get this because of the warranty) + low price - $65 (30 after $35 MIR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131142 nice sli board - $120

if u get the 8400, 8800gt, RAM with warranty, and the sli board it would be $605 ($540 after $60 MIR)
close to budget?

hold on, Havok, I love the CPU you recommended, but everyone seems to be recommending 800 MHz RAM.  why not go higher with DDR3, as K-J said?  1066 MHz?  1333 MHz?

exactly what i was hoping to hear!

okay, so about the motherboard and RAM...wouldn't i want the RAM to run at the same FSB as the CPU?  meaning 1333 MHz (i keep on thinking it's 1337, ) .... which means that a 780i would do me well?

It's not really that big a deal to do that. 1333MHz RAM is pretty expensive - I'd recommend just sticking with 1066 unless the price is right. 780i chipsets are pretty expensive, and would take a big chunk out of that budget - but it does offer triple SLi etc. Take a look at X38 chipsets - they are a bit cheaper but lack features seen in the 780i (which you might not use anyway)

i actually don't care about tri-SLI, but normal SLI would be nice.

does this look decent to you? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813128089

edit: nvm, that's running at 1200 max...this maybe? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813121090

oh, and what's the difference between PC3 10600 and PC3 10666 RAM?

Mhmm, generally I'd advise staying away from Intel motherboards - their BIOSes etc can be pretty limited. Although I'm not sure about the newer versions! 10600 and 10666 RAM? Can you give me a link? PC3 refers to DDR3.

First group is 10600.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi … PC3+10600)

Second is 10666.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi … PC3+10666)

How's this for a motherboard?  The XFX 780i.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813141005

RAM standard is DDR2 800 (up to DDR2 1200 with EPP 1.0).

Three questions:
1) What's EPP 1.0?
2) Will DDR2 800 memory be significantly slower than DDR2 1200/DDR2 1066/DDR2 1333 and the like?
3) Will it bottleneck my computer?  The proc is going to be the Q9300 (cooled by a Zalman CNPS9500 and overclocked) and the video card will be a 8800GT 512MB (overclocked by me of course).

Edit: Hmm, the P5E looks even better, as I don't care about tri-SLI.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131219

a) You do want a Q9300 or Q9450 - 45nm > all
b) You don't want DDR3 yet - cost efficiency sucks bollocks, you want DDR2-800 or -1066
c) Do you want sli? - If yes, then you want 680i or 780i chipset

a) Okay, just what I wanted to hear.
b) Not fast enough for the cost?  Okay.  DDR2 it is.
c) I do want SLI.  I'm looking at 780i and X38 chipsets currently.  Are X38s okay too?
