I've got a maths test coming up tomorrow. When I tried to read yesterday, I shut off everything, and gave my room fuse to mom along with the laptop battery.

I just sat there with my math book and did nothing for an hour. With no distractions, I just sat there and looked at my book, trying to solve one of the training things we got for about five minutes.

What should I do to motivate myself more? Apparently, negative motivaitons (Like removing the computer etc) won't work
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

It depends if you're forward motivated or away motivated - do you work better when you've got a 'prize' to aim for, or a 'punishment' to avoid?

If you're forward (towards a prize) motivated - ask your Mum to cook your favourite meal, but ONLY if you study for two hours.

If you're away (from punishment) motivated - ask your Mum to take away your computer(s) away for a week if you don't study.

Play some music and/or have a snack when you study. Helped me when I actually did it.

Bribe yourself with something you like. It usually works for procrastinating. I encourage me not drinking more than a can of coke a day with a can of coke a day. I don't know how it works but it does.

But then again I'm really bad at studying too. Never used to have to study so I'm new at it.

Depends what you are studying for.

If it is a subject where you can just answer questions, like maths science etc then I don't see a problem?

Other subjects where you just have to kind of read and know things...i dunno.

I never studied much at school so I guess I'm not much help. (and no I didn't drop out, I got an OP 6, which is equivalent to a "90" in other Australian states....dunno about other countries.)

Point is...be smart? I dunno.

well leaving your studying until the night before the exam is never going to help. I find that the best way is to start early but at a slow pace. Break yourself into the study routine by doing maybe about 30 minutes of reading each night to begin with, then as you get closer to the exam increase the time. By the time you start studying for longer than an hour (with breaks) your mind will be more relaxed and used to it.

I think when you try to cram studying the night before your brain starts to panick a bit and you can concentrate on the thing you are supposed to be learning.

Math is easy to study, just do the problems one after another. It's also pretty much the most important subject so I suggest you don't fuck it up. You've got the student exam in Åland too, right?

Now if you're reading a subject like history, split the book(s) into manageable parts like 20 pages a time and keep a break of playing on the computer or something in between. This way you're reading most of the text with a fresh mind too, so you absorb more knowledge instead of when forcing your self to read it all at once.

I'm awful at studying. It's why I've given Law a break for now, Law requires a shitload of study and reading and I'm simply not up to that. Even with all distractions removed I simply can't study. It's a maturity thing and a self-control thing. Us who cannot seem to study just need to be really tough on ourselves. It's tough, believe me I know.

Buy a box of address cards and as your revising write down notes on these and file them correctly for each subject, then sub-subject. Night before the exam get the cards out and go over them again.  In this case Maths, write down formulas, calculations, values etc

I'm sure there was a survey done where a majority of QLD's prefer the 'sunshine state' to the 'smart state'.

Depends on the person. I myself find that studying is unnecessary if you bothered to learn properly the first time round. There are those in Australia that would fail and badly if they didn't study as well, because they need things to be refreshed in their memory.

I feel your pain. I´m in the same situation right now. Got a really, REALLY important psychology exam on the 4th of april, which actually decides wether or not I can keep studying psychology. But instead of learning, I sit here with my chocolate bread in front of me, dipping my bathrobe sleeve into the chocolate while typing this. CRAP!
Anyhow, like it has been said: Split up thework. I divide the numbers of pages I have to learn through the days I have left.

Studying would be the best damn thing in the world if it wasn´t for all the learning. lol

Split it into parts, make a plant.
That's the only way I can study and I'd go as far as to say that most people need to do that.

In Finland we have this final exam at the end of 12-13 school years. You simply can't remember all from the lessons and not everything is taught either. You have to study, a lot.

First 10 years a school I never did any studying and always came out with 90% or better grades. Now I'm on the 11th year, which is a whole new level in our school system, if you don't study you are going to fail, BADLY.

However, I am gifted with some kind of leet math skills, so I get away with never studying for math and still getting 90-100% In history and other subjects were you have to read a lot, try to start early reading it, it always comes back at you if you wait till the last couple of days to read the damn book.

For languages...heck would I know, I suck at every language except for English (Icelandic is a bitch at this level)

My friend, that's why we have that wonderful institution of knowledge and learning called Amis No it doesn't have anything in common with Amish It's a shortening of Ammattikoulu = Vocational school.
No studying in vain. No need to stress for anything. Just go to classes if you remember to wake up before noon. Have fun. Learn to Kerava/Tikkurila-Tune your Toyota Corolla. And live your wonderful youth. Worked wonders for me, and now I'm doing basically nothing for my fine salary

In Australia (or NSW) we also have an exam for each subject at the end of year 12 which tests everything from the previous 2 years. My point is if you learn stuff correctly the first time it becomes second nature and you don't need to study it.

An example is, do you need to study how to count? or spell? or where the capital city is of your country? I'm guessing no, well take the same memory and just apply it to more complicated things like calculus.

"and not everything is taught either."
Well that's a piss poor education system then, not something I would have expected from Finland. The basic rule is Australia is, if you weren't taught it, you can't be examined on it (naturally there are probably some students/schools which fail to complete the curriculum but, that's probably their fault.)

The chances are it has been taught, more likely forgotten or worded in a different way.

You have to make yourself interested in what you do. Like I'm sure if I gave you a 100 page catalogue full of computer parts you could memorise all the names/specs/prices in a few days and write them down verbatim. With boring things like math I just make myself think about how cool it would be to know all this shit and with enough self-denial I'll find I've learnt a lot of it.
