Is canned air ok to use to clean off the fan and such on my video card?  It's been running hot and I can see there's dust that my vacuum just won't pull out.  My wife bought this: http://www.falconsafety.com/dustOff/dus ... GroupId=88

I know I have to keep the can upright and all that stuff. Any tips, think this stuff will be ok or what kind of thing do you use ...

Use compressed air ... vacuum really isn't a good idea

DO NOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER TO CLEAN COMPUTERS!!!

You WILL damage your computer. Use compressed air.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

lol vacuum is fine freezer, I use a mini vacuum cleaner that my parents always use in the caravan on holiday. And where the dust is really deep in the fan in I use a compressor. I've don this like a million this in multiple years, you won't damage anything unless you're a total retard.

I had pulled the vid card out of my old PC and the old PC was unplugged too.  Still not good?  I was wondering specifically about the brand I listed to make sure that would be ok to blow directly in the vid card.

You've both been very lucky, then. I don't know how many people have asked me what's wrong with their computers suddently starting to act weird afterthey've vacuum'd the insides. Vacuum cleaners make A_LOT of static electricity at the nozzle, and it will damage computer gear if it gets too close. Might not be visible straight away, though.

If you are doing it, stop it right now.

Proof of the static electricity? I'm still not convinced.

When dust travels in the air sucked through a vacuum cleaner it impacts on the pipe walls and other internal parts. These impacts generate static charges on the particles and on the pipe walls. Yeah, I know a couple of people that have killed computers by vacuum cleaning them. I don't give a shit whether you've done it and the computer has lived, it's a stupid idea.

I use eartips to remove dust from my fans or toothpicks with 1 layer of toilet paper wrapped around.

Use both the vacuum and the duster. Just keep the vacuum at a reasonable spot and blow all the dust into it.

Use canned air specifically made for electronics. Some types can make your components wet enough to short out.

But if you use canned air, wont the dust just settle again?

I think as long as you don't tip the can upside down the liquid doesn't come out.

Update:
Wow, blowing the dust out of my card w/ canned air seems to have made a HUGE difference in the cooling.

Card before de-dusting: high 50s and even into the 60s with GPU fan at 90% ... had to keep a 5 inch fan blowing on the card with the side panel off when playing games just to keep it in the 70s with GPU fan at 90% ....

Card after de-dusting: idle at mid to high 40s w/ GPU fan at 50% and side panel on ...

A miracle, ain't it? I love compressed air.

What is a big, discount retailer that doesn't suck quite as much as your equivalent to Wal-Mart?

Wikipedia answers all.

But based on what it said about your Australian Target, it doesn't seem much different.
