I found this article interesting since I did not know that much about the subject.  It seems Chavez is worse then I even imagined.   I wonder if Sean Penn reads Janes?

Here is the free version from Janes.  Some of you may not believe me when I say this, but if Janes reports it, it is fact.

"The offer appears to be reiterated or adjusted in a further email from Marquez sent on 8 February, this time citing a meeting with Chavez in which he is said to have proposed aiding the FARC by giving them USD250 million either through a black market foreign exchange transaction or by supplying the FARC with fuel it could sell.

The day after, on 9 February, Marquez informed the secretariat that Chavez wanted to thank the FARC for their gift of 100 million pesos when he was imprisoned. "

I've heard about this. He loses credibilty (what little he had) by supporting kidnappers. This explains the crisis with Colombia.

what cracks me up is people defend chavez for "standing up against US imperialism"  while he is guilty of, in principle and in fact, the same things they hate the US for. same thing with Castro.

Chavez has been providing a safe haven for FARC for as long as he has been in power.
He funds them and encourages them to attack Columbia and U.S. advisors. He has American blood on his hands. Drugs and kidnapping are what the FARC deals in, and drug money is funding a radical Marxist movement that threatens the whole region.

We should have invaded South America and left the ME for the dirt farmers.

Would we really want to invade, or just knock the leader out of power?

OK, why exactly does anyone believe even the slightest little thing coming out of Colombia?
Here's some background:

Colombia is by far the worst human rights violator in the hemisphere, union leaders, political opposition, human rights workers, journalists etc. can consider every day that they don't get murdered a blessing. This is done with complete impunity, the govenrment is heavily involved. There is no freedom of press, most journalists have recieved death threats. The entire governement is up to their necks with the drugs trade. The government forces have been known to massacre civillians and dress half of them up in FARC uniforms to put the blame on them. Nothing even close to this has happened in Venezuela.

The US has been providing billions of dollars of military aid to these fuckers.

The US is in an unending camaign to discredit Chavez, bizarly depicting him as anti-democratic, despite Washington's prefered candidate siezing power via a military coup, disbanding the National assembly, supreme court and other democratic institution before being overthrown by a popular uprising to get the elected Chavez back.

This story should read, Mass human rights violators and murders with a record of faking evidence against anyone who threatens their power invades a democratic country. This was done with the aid of the US who support the overthrow of the elected governemnt of Venezuela and it's replacment with a military dictatorship. Highly dubious evidence was found linking the enemy of the murders to the enemy of the pro-dictatorship US.

Even if it turns out to be true, there's no denying that the US has given and still gives vastly more support to far worse groups in Colombia and so should be prosecuting Clinton and both Bush's before getting on to the petty offenders like Chavez.

I really couldn't care less to be honest, it's no better or worse than the way in which the US backed anti-Castro terrorists in Cuba and protected the likes of Luis Posada the mass murderer. That's international 'politics' for you.

Chavez should not be consorting with FARC. If this story is true then Chavez should be ashamed of himself. Unlike usmarine though I don't take any given article in a private publication as holier than thou gospel. Why Janes would be any different from any other publication makes no sense.

Janes gets information that is leaked.  Information that governments would prefer not be made public.   Especially about top secret projects and what not.   Janes gets their information outside of official channels.

Don't governments and various institutions often 'leak' information deliberately...? For example, the 'accidental' nuclear bomber flight undertaken in the US recently around the time Russia were ratcheting up the Cold War II spirit.

Im sure thats the case for some instances.  But for the most part, Janes represents the most unbiased and accurate of sources dealing with other nation's militaries as well as ours.  Not too many people at the pentagon are happy with the amount of stuff that Janes publishes about American weapons and equipment.  I could only imagine other countries as well.
