I dont know.  FOX news reporting on the hiring processes of an Oregon Fire Dept because of the whole spanish deal isnt really being presented to inform anyone, just to rile them up because they know thats the kind of audience that would even care to hear about that.

Maybe whenever they talk about family values and what not.  That seems more along the agenda of conservatives.  My family values arent the same as everyone elses, but conservative news media likes to present their view with the presumption that everyone has the same definition.

I could just be retarded though.

Fox is the worst, absolute worst. Soo biased.

If we are speaking entirely of degree.  Nevermind Left or right, it's just soo bad.   CNN, imo, isn't as bad as fox, so i can tolerate it.  but, CNN too pulls some real groaners.

Anyone who relies on fox as thier only source of news is willingly denying the bias.  If fox wants to be the counter point to liberal media, fine. be right wing.  but under the guise of "fair & balanced" even the most conservative has to see past that bullshit.

Basically, no news does, or will have it from a truelly unopinionated point of view

That is your only option, and should be what everyone does. merely siding with one or the other is ignorant and lazy. Or, people who only watch fox or CNN are too deep into thier own political alegiance, that they aren't reasonable people anyway.

I think liberal bias is more often present in the selection of stories (or non-selection as the case may be). Like choosing only negative stories about Afghanistan or Iraq.

The conservative networks seem to blatantly push their own ideology in every story they run and hence it comes across as completely biased, they also make reference to other "liberal biased" networks and go on about how they themselves are "fair and balanced" themselves, this just makes explicit the fact that bias is on their agenda.

That was supposed to be humor.

I don't give a shit what news channel I watch.  Hell, I don't even watch news channels most of the time, I just grab my news off the internet (blogs only).  But in the end, I do enjoy my news coming from a source that doesn't sound like my last 5 English teachers/professors.  Doesn't mean I just completely shut out the rest of the channels.

I know, I was joking too, I wasn't trying to offend.

We discussed blogs earlier in the thread, I personally feel that with blogs you have to take even more care to scrutinise the information you take from them. It used to be the belief that the news stations were institutions where objectivity, truth and a desire to question everything were paramount. Sadly the news networks no longer shine in these departments and so they themselves have become glorified blogs if you will.

With blogs I guess you have to make sure you read enough of them, from the left, centre and right of the political spectrum. It's easy just to post a lot of codswallop on a blog and pass it off as news.

The same thing applies to the news...only there's a lot fewer choices for non-left sources.

Just out of curiosity are there any clips on YouTube of blatant liberal biased news reporting from any of the news stations? I know there's loads of stuff on FOX News but I've never checked for any other networks.

I ask because YouTube is a pretty democratic site in that you can put pretty much anything up there within the realms of decency and copyright law, it's not limited to only 'lefties' or only 'righties'.

Well, since Fox is the deviation from the mainstream, it sticks out to those who would post to YouTube. I'll look around a bit. However, I'm sure if you're a leftie, you'll say there's nothing biased at all about other networks' reporting.

Au contraire FEOS, I've said already in this thread that all news networks (both left and right) have bias in either their selection of stories or their reporting of stories. I just had the thought about examples on YouTube because surely there are at least a few conservatives who post videos there, it would be strange that only one news network gets made an example of.

I myself think FOX News is woefully biased but I accept that other liberal leaning networks too are not guilt free when it comes to bias either.

When I said "you" it was a generic term...didn't mean "Braddock". Sorry about that.

Have you watched the actual news broadcasts on Fox (as opposed to the morning show and opinion shows)?

It's still a bit of a generalisation, people left of the political spectrum are human you know

I would imagine the European version of FOX News is slightly different to the US version but we get the usual up to the minute reporting of news items, followed by weather and a bit of sport in a continuous cycle (that fills up most of the day) and then there are the occasional chat style segments like FOX and friends and the O'Reilly factor. One of my main criticisms is that the news bits kind of merge in with the opinion stuff and form a blurry whole. The graphics and overall style don't change that dramatically when you go from one to the other, it kind of feels the same on a semiotic level. The less discerning member of the public runs the risk of just equating the opinionated stuff to actual news. I don't get to see that much O'Reilly stuff tbh as it would require me to figure out the times he is on and make an effort to catch him but I do watch him when he happens to be on.

OK.  So, a news source should not try to effectively answer obvious questions that arise from the story?  Why the state would hire people who don't speak english is the root of the story.  Trying to get an answer is good journalism.
No they shouldn't, because answering those questions is providing an opinion.

Trying to get the views of officials on the matter is good journalism, asking questions about why they aren't doing it this way is not.

Ok this is just a stupid argument imo... FOX is very bias Flaming's example may not have been the best one.
yes that report is slightly bias but i beleive that may have more to do with the reporter/writers cultural attitudes, values and beliefs... the way it was worded may have been deliberate but how he spoke it.. i think thats just his natural way...

really this wasnt a obviously bias report, it is bias in the finer details... please this argument is pointless lol.

Left out. As I said in the other thread, there is no reason English is to be preferred over Spanish, as long as the whole crew is speaking the same language. Limiting it to English is a right view, though granted an obvious and popularly held one.

Virginia has been speaking english for 400 years.  This country has 230+ years of english tradition.  While it may not be an nationally ordained language, it is the language of the law and the majority of the country.

These firefighters should speak english.  What if they need to communicate with another citizen while on duty?  How can they do that effectively?
