Long story short, I bought a new car and some interior parts are painted, and I want to remove the paint. Was wondering if anyone knew something good to use to get paint off of ABS plastic instead of sand paper.

I googled it but could only find articles of what not to use on ABS plastic.

Paint thinner? That's the only thing I've ever heard of using.

I tried that but it was very ineffective. Would it be alright if I let the parts soak in the thinner for an hour or 2? Or will it eat the plastic up?

Really I don't know, try using it with a combo of steel wool. Check the can of paint thinner for directions.

Ya I think im just gonna let it soak for an hour in paint thinner. The guy who put it on before me really caked it on the AC vents and they are kinda hard to open. Also he used spray paint which just made it look horrible.

Wouldn't paint thinner melt the plastic over a period of time?

Go to the junk yard and buy replacement parts. That's why you don't buy a car with painted interior.
Never looks good painted unless your looking at it from about 40 feet away..

I'd use paint thinner.  Even if it melts your interior, you can sit inside with the windows up and kill brain cells. twofer

paint thinner and elbow grease. it will prematurely age the plastic, but if ur gonna paint it again it doesnt matter. Also, try using EZ-OFF Oven Cleaner.

as a last resort and as long as the paint is oil-based and not acrylic you can use sum #54 Reducer(very potent shit, higher than giraffe nuts in minutes) if u have sissy girl hands then u might wanna use some sort of chemical resistant gloves.

in the end if its still globbed up then just sand the globbed parts. and anything u use, u want to read the container thoroughly

paint thinner would fuck up your interior completely. there is specialized stuff for the job.

Ya im gonna soak the parts in a 5 gallon bucket for like 10 mins then just get a microfiber towel to rub off the paint. If that doesnt work I guess ill have to get sand paper, but if I go with the sand paper I will have to repaint the parts.

The parts I am taking the paint off of are removed from the car and are made of ABS plastic.

The paint strippers contain a combination of acetone, toluene and some have methylene chloride. Soaking it in a stripper may swell the coating enough for it to sluff off. I am not sure what the main polymer is in spray paint.  They have been moving to more ecofriendly products but that can come at lower performance. I thought the polymer in the spray paint was an alkyd but I am not sure. Some of the higher end spray paint may be polyurethane which is tough to remove but not impossible. I would avoid mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol as they are not potent enough to remove dried paint. The ABS should be fairly solvent resistant. However, I would let it air dry adequately to let the solvent evaporate.  If you paint on it and it still contains some of the stripper soaked into the ABS, your coating may not adhere.

I am guessing the paint you are removing is not waterbased. Those polymers have poor adhesion to plastics. Regardless, the polymer will come off with time and adequate soaking. You may have to play around with combinations of solvents. I recently used a 1:1 acetone:methylene chloride to remove am unknown coating from some metal parts. It made the coating swell enough to scrub it off with a brush. I know you can get acetone from Lowes but I am not sure about methylene chloride.  Find a chemist friend to help with that one.  Hope that helps.

steal wool will take it down far enoght to repaint over it. all you really are looking to do is give the new coat of primer something to stick to.

5800 USD to be exact.

I went to the auto part store today and asked the guy about it and he had no fucking clue what i was talking about. So, my friends dad works at LOWES and he was saying to just sand the parts and prime them.

So I guess thats what im gonna do.

Aceton, no really, I fucked up once when I was painting the centre hub of my Golf BBS rims and some paint dribbed onto the alu, used a polyester cloth and aceton, went of without any problems.

Well I used acetone originally to remove the dash paint and it removed it perfectly. Then I read on the internet not to use acetone and i was like fuck... oops.
