You're probably missing the two new maps (vineyard, countryside). Set your downloads to 'automatic' and it should prompt you.
Remember, if there's a map you don't have that's in the maplist you can't join the server.

I think though he doesn't have the two ranked-server maps, hence why he can't play on most servers.
