It would be great to give the middle finger to OPEC and the Saudis.....and others.  I hope for all of us here this is correct.

and yes I understand there is skepticism, so save it.

"The government estimated Thursday that up to 4.3 billion barrels of oil can be recovered from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota and Montana, using current technology.

The U.S. Geological Survey called it the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed."

this is not a solution, this is a bandage at best.  Oil is finite no matter how much more we're able to find.  This is to say nothing of the cost of the new technology which will obviously impact the final price regardless of OPEC bs.

Hydrogen man ... hydrogen.

I know that.  But it IS a solution until we get something better.

The current US oil consumption is at around 20.7 million bbl/day (http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/quickfacts/quickoil.html). At that rate we'd burn through that field (assuming total efficiency in extraction) in about 200 days.

well now we're arguing what "solution" means ... so yeah, I guess you're right in that context.  Regardless, it's at least a crutch in the meantime absolutely and I agree - let's hope it's correct.

underneath the poles there are gigantic amounts of oil supplies. We'll probably dig those up in the near future.

I think we're going to reach the point where we won't really need much oil. We're always going to need it (plastics, lubrication etc..) but it's main use is power generation and fuel.

Once we cut out the need to generate power using oil/fossil fuels completely, and then remove the need for oil as a fuel in cars/aircraft etc.., then we can finally move on.

Perhaps Fusion power is the key. Or you could go Nuclear like France, 80% of their energy comes from Nuclear. If they had 80% of their vehicles running on electricity, well they'd be almost totally dependant and not reliant on so much oil

Not to mention the massive environmental benefits

Tbh, car engines are quite quiet these days as it is. Most modern cars, you barely hear the engine of a car when it drives past (when driving normally) and infact most of the noise comes from the tires/contact with the road. Although it's the pedestrians fault if he gets hit because he was too dumb to look both ways, I mean how dumb can these stupid peds be that get run over, it's hardly ever the drivers fault. Now I'm all mad again

You hear the engine more inside the car than you do outside. Wind takes a lot of the noise out, as does talking.

I think superconductors should be the safe future for replacing the combustion engine.

Unless we all carry a tank of LN2, we need to wait until room temperature superconductors are discovered.

Like being hit by a prius?  How fucking embarasing is that lmao!

I was watching that crude documentary (name escapes me), and remember reading an article in the herald years ago, less they start coming up with stuff pretty soon, can see a few more Iraqs starting up :\

From the automotive industries point of view (who do more than they actually are obliged to), theres a bit of the what came first chicken or the egg scenario.  Even if someone came up with a wonder fuel tommorow, the car makers arent going to invest if theres no infrastructure to support them.  Likewise, no infastructure will go into place if there isnt a demand for it, meanwhile the super powers start flexing there muscles over the worlds last few energy wells....

I think that cars will be the last thing to break from oil overall- it would be easier to do alternative energy for houses (power, and heating, etc) than to change an entire nation's transportation.
