But when Puente turned 21 last June, she aged out of her state-funded health insurance and was unable to continue treatment at UCLA.

Late last month Puente learned of another, little-known option for patients with certain healthcare needs. If she notified U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that she was in the country illegally, state health officials might grant her full Medi-Cal coverage. Puente did so, her benefits were restored and she is now awaiting a fourth transplant at UCLA.
That's right. A low income U.S. citizen on state funded health insurance would have died.
After 23 years with a stolen identity she comes forward and admits to being a illegal alien.

Because as an illegal alien she gets the operation.

Larry Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen who has hepatitis C, has known for a decade that he needs a new liver but was just placed on the transplant waiting list last week.

"Why do we have to get in line behind immigrants, foreigners, when we have enough people here to fill the hospitals?" asked Gonzalez, 54, who lives in Ventura. "It just seems obvious to me that we shouldn't be taking a back seat."
Also in the news today it was announced that all the foreclosed homes in California would be given to migrant workers.

Wait, so people here that aren't citizens or any kind of papers can get Medical? And isn't Medical a state program? What the hell?

Shouldn't transplants be prioritized for citizens? This really isn't fair for the guy in the article that's been waiting to be barely put on the list for over ten years.

That's why I keep making these threads.
You're in California.

Did you have any idea that your government has given these kind of advantages to illegal aliens?

I don't know if I would say that transplants should be prioritized for citizens, but I don't think that illegals should get free insurance.

Yeah, I can understand it if someone was in desperate need of it, as in if he/she was going to die soon if refused treatment, but yeah, that free insurance thing is kind of infuriating. Considering I broke my arm in the 7th grade, and if it weren't for insurance that my family paid for, we'd be paying a huge chunk of money (to us at least); even with insurance my family still paid a couple hundred I believe.

No, I kind of had an idea that illegal aliens did get some advantages by the government. I just never knew the extent. Quite frankly, the reason this topic kind of hit close to home is because both of my parents are paying a lot of money due to their ailing health, and here's a person getting treatment for free.

I think rather than thinking illegal aliens get it so easy, you should be asking why the normal citizens get it so hard.

I have to admit....  The more I learn about California, the more I get the impression that it's kind of an Ayn Rand version of hell.

Why the hell does an illegal get free and seemingly instant treatment? I mean I'm all for the hippocratic oath and whatnot, but shouldn't LAW ABIDING citizens get first dibs? As a lawful immigrant going through the residence process, it really ticks me off that stuff like this happens. Why the hell is my family paying all this money and taking all this time when I could just let my visa expire and leech of the system?

It's a pity that average citizens do not feel the same rage about immigration as the legal immigrants I have known.

I have known some that struggled for ten or more years to get citizenship; you want to see anger? Ask them how they feel about Mexican illegal immigration being ignored.

That's because the legal immigrants aren't making a shitload of money off of illegals.  They'll probably start joining in the fun soon enough though.

Between our mortgage crisis, the Iraq War, our devaluing currency, and illegal immigration, I see a great fall for America in the near future mostly because of our own greed....

It does seem like a more sensible way to look at it.

There's another, less nice, possibly way of looking at it too. Illegals work long hours for little pay and have to go without plenty of the rights that legal citizens get. They're therefore more important to the economy in the region than legal citizens, hence get preferential treatment. It's more important to business to have healthy illegal workers than healthy legal workers.

Interesting article.

Besides the known problem of securing the borders, there is an ethical question: do you grant medical care to people who are illegal in the country. According to the article the State of California does so to children under the age of 21, and passes them to the local county when they reach that age. The answer is simple: you simply can not give care to people under a certain age and then deny care (liver tx in this case). You give care all the way, or you don't.

You can't let people freely into the country, take advantage of them, and then deny them any rights. Close your borders first, check out who is in illegally, decide who you want to keep and get the others out.

People saying 'citizens' should be first in line, should read this excerpt:

article wrote:

But Dr. Michael Shapiro, vice chairman of the ethics committee for the organ network, said illegal immigrants have just as much right to organ transplants as U.S. citizens. He said it is likely that more illegal immigrants donate organs than receive them.

"People are people, and when you make an incision in an organ donor, you don't find little American flags planted on their organs," Shapiro said.
FYI: the cost of one dialysis treatment in Belgium is € 250 (at 3 times each week, it costs an average of € 3.250 each month). This is payed by the social security, so it costs the patient nothing. A kidney transplant (10 day hospital) will cost the patient € 750 (which can be covered by a private insurance, so again it costs nothing). Free healthcate ftw (downside: our taxes are high ).

It's also California so you need to keep the immegants healthy, she'll be getting out of the hospital and cleaning the house of the govern soon..

That's because they are afraid of being labeled as racists...regardless of their ethnicity.

I went off about illegal immigration the other day to someone spouting off about how it was tragic that illegal immigrants didn't receive more rights and deserved to be here, blah blah blah.  He then accused me of being a racist which was interesting because I had only mentioned illegal immigrants.  This individual was latino.  I promptly pointed out the assumption HE had just made and that he was therefore far more racist than my stance simply on illegal immigration and he shut right the hell up.  God I love doing things like that.

Illegals got here ILLEGALLY.  their fault if they have to deal with problems and have to drink piss to get to the border then get thrown back.  why not just go in legitly and legally and have more benefits and a house and a job without the fear of having ur 2 month old kid staying with some foster home because you got caught being illegal.  no one (mostly) likes imported cocaine, so why have imported people who go and take people.  A legal citizen is waiting for 20 years to get a heart transplant and is about to die, the next week the docs call and say she can go get a heart.  then, an illegal immigrant who was waiting for 25 years decides thats her heart and shes getting it.  lets say the legal citizen got her citizenship the hard way and the illegal just snuck in.  who do you think should get the heart?  some freeloading ungrateful sack of **** who doesnt pay taxes or own a job and probably steals and is in like 8 gangs.  or the legal citizen who took it the real way?
