I've just completed and submitted a 15000 word write-up on VoIP which represents my final piece of academic work for the forseeable future.  I freaking hate this system, but the damn piece of paper I'm now entitled to should bring more money.  Not that it represents and knowledge gained as a result of the degree mind you - I did that on my own in the real world of course.  [/rant]

I was just curious what some of the rest of you had undertaken in acadamia.

for shits and grins i started to write a book about the soviet occupation of afghanistan.
i met Charlie Wilson (actually have his signature in my book, fuck the movie), Mike Vickers and Valentin Varennikov (who also hooked it up with a signature).
i put about eight months into it. a friend wanted to read it, so i let him take it. he got into a car accident, totaled his car, and i never saw it again.

no more of that...

I have aided in others research work, and original work that I have done is being prepared for publication currently.  I have one paper near complete and another in the works.

Other than that, I have completed a few research papers.  The most notable was a 30 page biography of Sir Isaac Newton.

Edit:  It occurs to me that I never said my topic of work.

The paper near complete is on computational models of outflows from young stellar objects.  I created synthetic observations and everything.  Lots of pretty pictures.

The paper that's in the works is on MHD jets in an inhomogeneous environment.

For my capstone project, I (and my team) researched, modeled, and documented the savings one could realize utilizing low/no cost energy conservation methods at a large industrial complex near my university. Ridiculously long, many appendices, graphs, tables, and whatnot.

I graduated before capstone was brought on.  But I did take some extra courses with the young college students.  I would have preferred to do that project on my own.  Group work blows.  That thing didn't look like a lot of fun.

Especially when it's you and four Malaysians who speak very little English.

I'm in the middle of writing my chemistry thesis which I'm currently distracting myself from. It'll probably hit about 60,000 words give or take. Either that or I'll go insane.

Clearly your writing skills are so awesome he couldn't handle it. That or they're so bad they cause accidents.

...

Sorry.

For the record, I would like to say I maintain an endless thist for knowledge and greater understanding, however that has sadly become deviated from acadamia.

I wrote my degree thesis on "The Use And Iconography Of Television & Video In Contemporary Cinema", that was 15'000 words and my Masters thesis is an accompanying report on a practical multimedia project I'm doing at the moment which will also be about 15'000 words...then I'm never going to write again for the rest of my life!

Absolutely nothing. A mere 2500 words or so on Shakespeare. However, next year I'm undertaking around 4 or 5 minimum 5000 words essays for English Literature - indefinitely a lot longer.

I wrote a 4,000 word essay on the UK housing market. Now that was a tedious essay.

Probably a 7-10 page paper. Nothing too big. Content over quantity.

Greater content = greater quantity.

If you undertake a large, deep topic, chances are length is inevitable.

Then again, being repetitious is terrible.

A 12,000 word market report on the British pub industry (a subject very close to my heart) for university, I got a 1st for it which I was well chuffed about.

I would dig it up for you guys but it is on my computer which is being repaired hundreds of miles away in London at the minute.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Explains why academics tend to not perform well outside of academia. They are about form over substance. If you turned in a 15,000 word report to your boss that could have been done in under 10k, you'd lose all kinds of credibility.
