In the latest AAA poll as oil hits a a record $117 a barrel and gas gets closer and closer to $4 a gallon, more and more drivers are doing just the opposite and shelfing their keys.

Of the nearly 500 Arizona drivers responding to the recent AAA online poll, 59 percent said they had already changed their driving habits.
Twenty percent said would drive the same no matter what the price of fuel is. Six percent set $3.50 a gallon as their breaking point, while 12 percent said a price of $4 would cause them to reduce their driving.
Considering this poll was taken at least a month ago, $4 a gallon was still a ways off. Now that it is essentially on our financial doorstep, how will it affect you guys.

Right now I pay 1.050€/ litre. I guess if it reached 2€ I'd use a bike for everywhere. Or stay home.

Its 1.83/L here at the moment, which works out to about 5.45USD/gallon.  Its been this high before, and at about this point public transport recorded higher usage while petrol stations reported falling sales.

Even when it was under $1/L I still walked most places, so it doesn't bother me as much as most.

Stupid thing is, we export about 40k barrels/day while importing 120k...why not just import 80k...

Public transport + bike = win. Driving is for losers.

will you Americans please sytop whining about supposedly high gas prices. As I said before, I'd kill for gas prices as low as in the US.

Right now, gas is at 1,42 €/liter here, that's around 5,37 € per gallon, or 8,59 USD $/ gallon.

I guess the oil companies know that people love to drive everywhere in the US, and that they love their V8's, too. So they'll continue to rip you off as long as they can.

I would say people will continue to pay whatever is charged. They have to get to work, take their kids to the doctor, etc.

I do, however, believe that (as already evidenced) people will start changing their vehicles for more economical ones and changing their driving habits to reduce the amount they have to drive (carpools, mass transit, etc).

I chose $10/gallon. It's the equivalent of $5.25/gallon here (yes i converted for you Amerifags) and I enjoy driving and fucking love cars. So I may go as high as $10/gallon. After that, i fucking give up, gonna buy cars and just keep them for their awsomeness.

It's all converted to dollars/gallon or dollars/litre.

USA have it so much cheaper than most of everyone else. Turkmenistan must be a drivers heaven. Although I guess, it's all balanced out across the world when you take into account average wages etc..

We already pay $8 a gallon in Europe, im pretty sure most people would pay up to $15 or so before everyone moves to mass transport.

Realistically, I voted $5.00. I knew coming into this that I would see Euro folks saying how easy we have it, and Cam is always a sucker for public transportation (although Homer Simpson has stated on numerous occaisions that it is for losers). In my town, there is really no public transportation except for a bus that goes God only knows where. Next year at college, I'll pretty much have to use a public bus system because they actually have one in West Lafayette and I won't have a car. I imagine that my tolerance for gas prices would go up if I were driving one of those new smart cars, some hideous hatchback, or a [whiny girly voice] Prius [/voice]; but I just can't see myself driving something so lame.

There are certain places I simply can't go without a car, but I started changing my driving habits about 7 years ago.  Even back then I thought driving my truck was getting to be too expensive.  My current car is a 2001 Eclipse 4-cylinder that gets pretty good mileage.  I also bike to work 2-3 days a week during the summer when weather permits.

I pay £1.07/litre at the moment. Which is a pain in the arse, since I'm planning on driving down to Florence (via Burgundy, Chamonix and Lake Garda - all favourite haunts of mine) fairly soon for a little road trip.

Public transport is shit and I love my car.

There's no way I'd buy anything with more than a 2.0L engine though (I currently drive a 1.8 Alfa 156). Petrol costs would be insane. But in a way I don't mind the fuel prices being so high, since it penalises the fuckers with no consideration for the environment driving around in vehicles with huge engines.

No choice, gotta drive for work.  And I don't live in a city that is large enough to have an extensive public transportation network so I drive.

I don't have much of a choice but to drive, but if it gets over $5, I will be turning my car off and coasting down hills every chance I get, and maybe tie a donkey to the front of my car too.

I just paid $3.93 a gallon for regular unleaded for a $75 tank of gas for our little honda minivan.  Yum.

I voted $8 a gallon because that's when I'd stop using gas..I'm really hoping the technological superiority of the US of A will kick in and advance us to where we need to be and replace the combustion engine because there's gonna be lots of bicycle riding around here as we approach European prices.

I own a 2007 Black prius, and is one of the best car's ive ever owned. Gettin 49.6 life time avg off the MFD display..usually get 525 mi to a tank..if i got more into hypermiling i could easily pull 60+ like some guys are doing with proper driving technique.

and prius isnt a sissy car, unless your driving silver pine mica..lol Mine is black, and has a kickin sound system in it to boot. Great thing abour prius is you can really throw some nice 10's in with alot of watt's goin to them. The car battery/hybrid system handles alot of power draw and has no affect. One guy online is running 2 class D monoblocks at 1500w each for over 3 years with no ill effects, no need for extra batteries or a rewound alternator..the prius owns.

next gen 3 prius body, will have 1.8l turbocharged, and hopefully 20% more FE. Rumour is litium ion batteries, but we'll see. I would like to see higher capacity NIHM at least, they had them in the EV1 which could go roughly 120mi on a charge. Now what they need to do instead of rumoured plug in for 2010, is do solor panels built into the roof, like one of the cal car prius on youtube..no need to plug in, with Regen and hybrid recharge+solor..120MPG easy.

See, that's the problem. I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not, but the fact that you link Electric/Less Pollution and Efficiency to "girly" or "gay" even if the car doesn't even look girly or gay, is totally fucked up. Ever realise why places like Saudi Arabia are so backwards, it's because they're scared of new things so they instead make fun of it/outlaw it. America will go nowhere with an attitude like that.

There aint nothing gay or girly with the Prius just because it's a Hybrid. Fuck. If you guys are so god damn insecure like that...
