Hello there.

My computer have suddenly decided that it doesn't want to work anymore.
I've had no problems whatsoever but from one day to the next it just doesn't work.

I haven't kicked it, I haven't moved it, I haven't opened the case, haven't experienced any graphic glitches, strange noises, artefacts, nothing.

So this is what's working
When I push the power button all the fans starts spinning (fast) but the boot sequence won't initiate.
I can open and close the DVD-tray and when I do this the "shut up I'm working" light comes on.
That's it.

It just "freezes" like this with the fans spinning and nothing happens until I turn the computer off.
(No signal to the screen either)

Since I don't get any error messages I don't have much to work with here.
I don't have extra parts to swap in order to identify the culprit.

This is what I've tried
I opened the case to check the fans and that nothing have been knocked loose for some reason.
Removed some dust with compressed air.
Profanity.

The 2½ year old computer have the following specs
* Club 3D GeForce 7800GTX 256MB PCI-E DVIx2+TV+VIDEOin
* AMD Athlon 64 3500+ BOX S-939
* Asus A8N-E, Socket 939, PCI-E, ATX, Nvidia nForce 4 Ultra
* 2 x Samsung 1GB DDR PC3200, 400MHz 184-pin
* Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB NCQ 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s 8MB cache
* NEC ND-3550 DVD±R/RW SVART, bulk
* Antec NeoPower 550W
* OS = XP

Like I said, I don't get too many indications about what the problem is here but my gut says the processor isn't working properly since nothing happens after the initial "burst" of activity in the fans.

I need your help here guys so thanks in advance.

Hmm... this is going to be a tough one to diagnose...

The fact that the fans and DVD drive are powering up shows you PSU isn't dead - so we can probably rule that out (though it could be that it's not providing enough power, or too much power).

The most likely culprits are:

Dead CPU.
Dead BIOS.
Dead Mobo.

Does it make any beeping noises?
Was it overclocked at all?
What was the last thing you did with it before it stopped working?
Do you have a surge-protector?

Indeed, the lack of symptoms and available data is very frustrating indeed.

No noises.
No overclocking.
Pimping my Rocketdock. (Perhaps Timmmaahh's the culprit?)
No surge protector. (Nothing else is acting funny though so a power spike seems unlikely)

OK, with a dead CPU I'd expect error beeps.

So, I'm thinking it's a dead mobo/BIOS (either way you'll be needing a new mobo).

I haven't tried reseting CMOS.

Or unplugging HD, DVD and a stick of RAM.

Could be worth a shot but since I don't even get even close to reaching bios or whatnot I fear it won't work.

Update:

Disconnected DVD, HD and a stick of ram and finished it all by clearing CMOS.

No difference whatsoever.
The fans go on and nothing else happens.

When i had this problem it was cos my monitor went offline. Move your mouse, tap the LCD a bit, unplug and plug the dvi cable back into the gfx card and the lcd.

If he is not getting the "all clear" beep, then something is wrong besides the monitor. A computer will boot normally without one attached, provided it is functioning properly.

I never get an all clear beep?

But maybe that is because my bios speaker isn't connected

Mine never beeped either.

*sigh*

So I guess we're back to "faulty mobo-land"?

There's your problem. Kicking it always works.

mobo is my first guess. My Asus P5N32-E SLi did that once in a while when it went to hate mode...

wait... does the hard drive cruch like normally getting in windows?

I'm not even close to reaching Windows.
(It stops well before reaching bios)

A friend had this problem today with Asus maximus and i fixed it. He had the wrong cable inserted. He had the 6 pin gfx cable inserted in the mobo socket instead of 4/8 pin. So recheck if all cables are plugged in correctly into correct sockets.

Unplug all USB devices (except maybe your keyboard and mouse)

My Computer wouldn't get past the POST screen when some USB harddrive was connected.
I realise you are'nt even getting that far, but it could be of some help.

If you have a different PSU you can try, do that, but otherwise my initial guess is bad mobo.

I have removed everything when turning it on (keyboard, mouse etc) but it's still the same.

Was a wee bit tired last night so I didn't muster the energy to open the case again and remove the GPU but I connected the monitor to the second socket but no difference.

Noticed that when I remove the DVI from the tower, the monitor instantly recognizes this and says "check signal cable".
When I connect again it does the 'ol "analog, digital, analog, digital, sleep..." routine so I don't think the GPU is the culprit.

Unless the day reveals something absolutely amazing I will order a new mobo, RAM and CPU.

That's actually a good idea either way. Your stuff is pretty outdated. Not horrible, but it's outdated.

Yeah I know it's just that I wanted to wait until a new game arrives and forces me to upgrade.
(BF3?)

I only play BF2 and BF2142 and a little TF2 and I've got NO problems whatsover with this rig.

In that Case, Id suggest going intel. A decent dual/quad with 4 gigs of ram should sail through BF3.

yeah. I just checked prices of E2180 boxed and it is only 56€. I might get one myself.
