The wait for the latest version of the cure and cuddly Linux distribution known as Ubuntu was long enough so today, its developers have finally let the Hardy Heron loose. Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support) is now finally released in both its Desktop and Server variations and it comes with too many new features to mention in one phrase. It's new, it's got at least 3 years of support and it's free for download... need we say more?
With Ubuntu Desktop Edition you can surf the web, read email, create documents and spreadsheets, edit images and much more. Ubuntu has a fast and easy graphical installer right on the Desktop CD. On a typical computer the installation should take you less than 25 minutes.

I have five linux boxes. It's not ignorance. I just haven't seen any evidence that Linux is ready as a desktop operating system yet. Even Ubuntu hinges on Aptitude. If that goes wrong, so does the OS for the average user. The complexity that the user is exposed to in Linux is too great for it to work as a Desktop OS without much more comprehensive changes. It wasn't ever meant as a desktop OS, and it still isn't.

Come on, I got my mom to use it.  All she has to do all day is click on the little red Fox icon or the one that looks like a notebook.  How much easier could it be?

Granted, setting up hardware with it is a bitch, but that's what techies are for.  After that, it's simple to use.

Anyone can make a platform for a single purpose. If being able to browse is the defining benchmark of a good desktop OS, then AmigaOS, and even Workbench would qualify as such. A desktop OS is supposed to be a versatile and easy-to-use productivity tool, and that's where even Ubuntu falls short.

Ubuntu is a niche OS, and it needs to be much, much more robust to change this. No package manager can change that. Linux never was meant as a desktop OS, either.

Linux on a desktop is as silly as Windows on a server. For specific users and tasks, sure, but for general application? No way.

Well, stay-at-home moms only need internet surfing and word processing capabilities.  So I think Ubuntu fits the bill just fine for them.

You're right though, with anyone else it's not enough.

It's also great for old laptops. Windows XP was too much for it, and Ubuntu runs fine.

tried that on my old laptop, and added memory.  still runs like crap.

but hey, that's what you get for a $800 laptop bought maybe 5 years ago.
