Seriously.  The fact that Muslims are in the US army is evidence against stereotypes of people who follow the Islamic faith.
Well, that and the fact that in the quagmire of the '90s (Bosnia), we were unofficially rooting FOR the muslims (aka, the Bosnians) against the Serbs and Croats.
Yeah.

Most of the people who associate Islam with violence are ignorant hillbillies anyways.  Just so nobody quotes me and points out the obvious - the Muslims that go around shooting people and whatnot are Radical or Fundamentalist Muslims, many of the former mis-interperet the Qu'aran.  According to the Qu'aran:

"permission to fight is given only to those who have been oppressed... who have been driven from their homes for saying,'God is our Lord'" (22:39)

Also, we see all this bullshit in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan under the Taliban.  The two, as well as many violent radicals, subscribe to Wahhabism.  Mainstream Islam actually even encourages women to be educated and whatnot, yet fundamentalists such as the Taliban brutally enforce their beliefs.

Wahhabism is the majority of the problem, but there are other factors as well.

There are several pre-Islamic customs that were incorporated into Islam in the Middle East.  Many of them are the origin for abuses against women.

Nevertheless, it is undeniable that Mohammed himself was a warlord.  We can only hope that the majority of Muslims move towards reformism, so that we can all get along better in this modern world.  Thankfully, our good relations with the Albanian Muslims is evidence that working together is possible.

Same thing in Europe during the middle ages.  During that time, women actually had more rights in Muslim countries than they did in European countries.

That most military personnel aren't like this goes without saying (indeed, it is so elemental that I figured it unnecessary to mention), my point being that in cases where you have senior personnel (and/or political figures) blurring the line between religion and policy it tends to filter down through the ranks.

If you have Lt. Gen. Boykin talking about the war on terror in religious terms and some other senior generals appearing at evangelical functions in uniform goes a long way towards creating a toxic atmosphere, especially if civilian leadership doesn't do much to enforce existing rules.
If that Maj had tried to do any of the things he said, he would have had his ass handed to him by his bosses and/or the JAG. The Maj is an idiot. As for the Thanksgiving meal, if the guy didn't want Hall sitting at his table, he has every right to ask him to move, whether it's because the guy is an atheist or because he smells like cheese.

BL: Hall wouldn't have been persecuted for his belief (or lack thereof). Any attempt to do so by superiors would have resulted in serious time with the IG.

And Boykin was put out to pasture after that incident, specifically because of his behavior...by the civilian leadership.
