I am currently trying to setup a file sharing in a network with multiple computers which are connected to a single router. (2 wired, 2 wireless)

I'll name computers
A: Main computer (Wired)
B: My laptop (Wireless)
C: Roommate's computer (Wired)
D: Another Roommate's apple laptop (Wireless)

Now, I disabled the simple file sharing and trying to play around with the folder permission. I have set my computers A & B to be on same workgroup. The problem is that I cannot locate my computer B when I am trying to add the user to modify the permission granted. All I see in the list is things in computer A such as,

Name (RDN)             In Folder
Administrator                 A
Network
John                             A
System
User                             A

Maybe my computer B is hiding amongst the list but it is not possible for me to locate. It would be greatly appreciated if one of you can help me out.

I'm not sure I understand your quandary.  Ok, I do but I have a question before I can really say.  Are you trying to have all four computers on the same network because you mentioned you have only two computer on the same workgroup and you didn't mention the other two.  I'll mention my setup.

I have one PC and one laptop.  The PC is connected via ethernet while the laptop is connected via wireless.  I can see things on the laptop from my pc and vice versa.  The laptop is upstairs and can print to my printer downstairs where my PC is.  The folders are shared and can be changed intermittently whenever the need arises.  Is this something you want?  Or are you just trying to establish permissions on your folders?

Ya. It is sort of like what you have said, except that the only two computer that I am trying to connect are my computer A & B, and I do not want to network with C and D.

I guess I will try to narrow my question (problem) so that it is easier to understand.

When selecting user to grant permission in 'Select Users or Groups', I am trying to change the 'From this location' so that I can grant access to an account which is located in another computer. However, it seems that I cannot see any computer besides the computer that I am trying to share. Both computers that I am trying to network are in same workgroup. I used to use simple Now, I am not sure whether this is possible or not. If it is possible, please instruct me of enabling such function.

I'm not too hot on setting up this stuff, but...

Try clicking the 'Locations...' button?

Well, the problem is that the only computer that is available in that 'Location' is the comuputer that I want to share files from.

I see...

In that case, the easiest way is probably just going to be to force the computer name, thus:

<computer name>\<user name>

That is, if the wireless computer is named 'WIRELESS' and has a user 'bob', you just type 'WIRELESS\bob' (without the speech marks, obviously) into the 'Enter the object names to select:' edit box...

I think that should work.

Ya. I tried forcing like that before, but XP only allows those that can be seen in the list and rejects the request.

I assume your laptop is on?

If so, can you see it in My Network Places?

In fact, can you see anything in My Network Places?

When I run \\192.168.1.102 (which is my local ip for laptop) in cmd, it displays login thing for the account on the laptop.

Ya. I can view and stuff, when I a folder to share, My Network Places is able to detect the folder, but since I cannot set the folder permission specific to my laptop, I cannot access it.

AH!

Are the user-names and/or passwords that you use on your desktop PC and laptop different?

If so, basically, you need to create a new user on your desktop PC that has the same name and password as you use on your laptop, and then set the permissions for that user (the new one on the desktop).

Are you logged in as an Administrator?

If so, you should be able to use administrative shares, like \\COMPUTER\c$

Well that's where my knowledge of sharing and permissions and networking and all that jazz runs out - I'm stumped.

Yes, I have admin account on both computers, please elaborate more on the method you have suggested.

You should be able to literally type \\COMPUTERNAMEHERE\c$ in the address bar to access the root C drive of the target machine.  I use it sometimes...it's pretty handy.  I believe those are automatically shared, so don't worry about that.  The $ sign is important, so don't forget to put that in.  This only works on XP pro.  I don't recall if you said that's what you have or not.  Use your admin accounts and give it a shot.

If you want more info, they are called "Administrative shares".

Whoa, that partially worked.

What I mean by partially, is that I can access my drive in laptop from my desktop, but not vice versa. Strange...

But at least it is an improvement.

Never mind, after restarting it worked perfectly. Thank you so much, it is not what I wanted exactly but it solves the problem.

I'll leave +1 for all of you gentlemen who tried to help out.

Thank you.

P.S. If you can still solve the original problem, please tell me so.

Glad to see it's working.

You make things a bit more convenient by making shortcuts to whatever resources you use frequently.

It's just like any other shortcut:  \\COMPUTER\c$\PathToWhateverYouWant\

Edit:  I have tried to make windows be nice to with other systems, but I always end up defaulting to the admin shares.  I don't have the heart to spend a lot of time on another solution.

I actually have the same problem.
One PC has XP installed, the other has Vista installed.

The PC with XP installed, can access the other PC. On the other hand, the PC that has Vista on don't allow me to access the XP PC.

And, all I use is Windows Firewall on both.

@OP, did you actually create any shared folders on the PC you're trying to access?  since you can connect to the admin share, it seems like all is working.  now you have to actually share a folder from the other computer so you can connect to it by using \\computer\share

@r'eeee, make sure file and print sharing is enabled on the firewall

StormEye: Actually, I've had one more thought - have you already set any permissions on the folder you're wanting to access from the laptop?

If so, post a screeny of the relevant dialog(s) - you may have done something screwy with it...
