Celebrations have taken place across Israel to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state.  Fireworks, concerts and an aerial display were among the events laid on, while Israeli families enjoyed picnics and barbecues for the national holiday.  Israel declared itself an independent state on 14 May 1948, three years after the end of World War II, and the death of six million Jews in the Holocaust.  But Palestinians know the foundation day as al-Nakba, or "the Catastrophe".  They held solemn marches in the West Bank, meant to symbolise the hope of Palestinian refugees to return to villages in what is now Israel.

These charts and figures speak for themselves.  Israel has the right to exist.  But at what cost?
In 1948 the creation of Israel solved the Jewish Nation problem, but created another one, the Palestinian problem.  How do we solve that?
I think that everyone should come up with ideas to solve this conflict.  I have an idea myself.  Many people here said before that they should move Israel to Arizona or some other US state.  That is ridiculous.  Israel should stay where it is now.  What about leaving Israel where it is, but as a US state?  Nothing would change that much anyway.  The only reason Israel exists today is the US protection.  So, let Israel become a part of the US.  If things stay the way they are today, sooner or later something really bad will happen in Israel and that should be avoided.  The US would have another state, a very strategic settlement in the Middle East.  Israel would be a safer place, nobody would mess with the US.  And Palestine would become a country, because the US would support the creation of a free Palestinian state.  It's a win win situation.

Happy birthday Israel.

Various names, one being Palestine, another being the Kingdom of Israel.

And before that, it belonged to someone else too. The Arabs won the land by force, why can't the Jews do the same thing? Double standards methinks.

So if a superior military nation takes the UK by force you'll shrug your shoulders and say 'fair enough'...

This isn't like other parts of the world. That place has always been about whoever can fight for that bit of land the best.

Oh yeah and If someone manages to take over the UK, considering how we have Nukes and are second in spending after the USA and shit. I'll be impressed for sure. Highly unlikely though.

Heard the fireworks display was going to be over Palestine, and the aerial display was going to be a demonstration of the airforce in action.

Nice avoidance of the hypothetical. You are basically saying 'one rule for us, another rule for them'. Bollox really. It seems to me you care more about Israel and rewarding their mliitary prowess than the millions of Palestinians who lost everything as a result: houses, farms, businesses, belongings...

Exactly 60 years ago the Israelis were in the process of destroying 435 Arab villages and towns. In a one-year period in 1948-1949 they wiped out over 400 Arab villages, either killing all the inhabitants or driving them off their land. They then either demolished the houses or took them over for Jewish use. This was exactly 60 years ago.

This is what they are celebrating

They are not much better today, since they are pretty much still doing the same thing, although on a somewhat reduced scale.

What about all the people in the 7th Century who lost everything to the Muslim Arabs. The argument works both ways.

Fine, if somehow, even though there's Nukes and shit. Someone managed to take over the UK. I probably would be impressed.

If I was a descendant of someone who took over the UK previously from someone else, and then that someone else fought and won it back. I probably would fight back on the premise that you're just supposed to cos that's how it is, just like the Palestinians. However, at the end of the day it would be our fault for not keeping up with the enemy and letting them take over in the first place. Surely.

Once again, I'm not saying that the Palestinians shouldn't fight back. Fight back if you want. Just don't complain when your enemy does the same.

Yeah, but this country wouldn't suck at resisting. Unlike certain Ottomans did against British and Commonwealth forces, which led to the British mandates and all that

Why is it that you question the Israeli right to fight for the land, but you think it's ok for the Palestinians to fight. They should be both allowed to fight, and the victor gets the spoils. Cos that's how it is

Both the Israelis and the Palestinians have the right to that land.  So, given the situation, they should let the Palestinians have their own country in the OT's.

Israel should stay where it is now.  What about leaving Israel where it is, but as a US state?  Nothing would change that much anyway.
One thing which might change is it might be harder to funnel $6bn a year to them.
If the US wants the Israelis so badly give them Texas.
If all the Israelis want is a jewish state they can have it anywhere, Alaska for example.
If its just a 'worthless patch of desert' why do they feel the need to fight over it? Why not just pick somewhere easier?
Fuck Israel

Israel is directly responsible for the daily plight of millions of men, women and children. While they live the life of luxury through full support of the west, both military and economic, they starve the original inhabitants of that land. How can such people even pretend to speak of peace? The Israelis are hypocrites, if they wanted peace then they would start by ending the occupation and dismantling all settlements.

The palestinians have a legitimate right to resist Israeli oppression.

Israeli's have as much right to be there as the Palestinians. Like I said, the Arabs aren't the original inhabitants of that land.
