Nine police officers shot at barrister Mark Saunders in scenes described today as "like the OK Corral".

Police will now face new questions about why so many opened fire during the Markham Square siege in Chelsea on 6 May.

The 32-year-old was killed after firing a shotgun at members of the public and officers from the windows of his £2.2 million flat.

Mr Saunders, a former member of the Territorial Army, was hit five times by marksmen.

Hell I don't know, could have been something to do with the whole waving-a-shotgun-out-of-a-window-and-shooting-at-people thing. Sigh.

I would have thougt the issue would be if they didn't attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.

The loon was firing at the public, and at the police. Does it really matter that so many opened fire?

Infact, serious questions would have to be asked if only one officer fired and the rest didn't.

TBH if I'm being shot at I'm not going to take into consideration whether the person is mentally ill or not before shooting back.

And of course the only issue that could possibly exist is what the police did.

It's not like the questions could revolve around why his illness wasn't picked up, or how he got the shotgun.

Ignoring that, if 9 police officers were there it sounds like it'd been happening for a while, which may well mean the area was clear and noone was in immediate danger, therefore allowing police to try other methods, like negotiation.

But as I said, I don't know based on the facts at hand whether any of those are true. It could also be that it was supposed to be the start of the uprising in which case motive is important because it could warn about other similar attacks on the way. Or it could be that neither of those is true. Until we get more information (like his motive) I suppose all we can do is guess.
