you are woken up at 3 am from someone smashing your back door open, by the time you are fully awake you can hear them slowly creeping down the hall

Would you go for lethal or non-lethal

Id ask him nicely to stop what he is doing and demand that he pay for the damage.  might make him a cup of coffee or tea to ease the moment for both of us.

Aim the gun, tell them to leave now or that I'll shoot, and try to shoot them non-lethally if they refuse.

oohhh, tough one.  First, I have to confirm that they are not a family member.  Once you are confirmed as an unwanted intruder in my home, and I have a safe firing angle (you must be aware of both your target and your backstop), and center mass and pull the trigger until there is no longer a threat.

Oh, I used to be a pistol marksmanship instructor.  Center mass works quite well enough for me.

Poseidon, I frankly, form your other posts, do not consider you to be an idiot.  By that, I mean you seem the relatively intelligent sort of person.  Please take some formal training before you buy a gun.  Take classes.  Train.  Talk to police officers.  But get those silly notions of yours out of your head before you actually get in a situation like that.  Please.

Now that I have rediculed you, the attitude you display is pretty common, and very frightening to those of us who are or were "in the business."  I actually had a woman ask me "If you don't like where the bullet is going, how do you call it back?"

Lethal(Gun) in a non-lethal area(lower abdomen, knee)

I've talked to police officers, a former army corporal, a former Airman (not that he's got much firing experience), and someone who's got a collection of guns. I don't need them to set my moral standards.

If I have the time to do so, I'm not going to shoot to kill. And in this case, I most likely WOULD have time to decide.

And I will be taking classes, by the way. When I get a gun I'll be living in Florida (for college) and they're a pretty gun happy state, so...we'll see. Maybe my opinion will change. Actually, it probably will. But right now, if I were to be in that situation, I'd atleast try or not want to kill the person, just "end the threat" like you say.

Again, whether that would actually happen is another story entirely.

I would blow him the fuck away. One reason would be to keep him and his ACLU lawyer from suing me for scaring him

If their in my house and they aren't invited or family, it's lethal.  Unless I have them absolutely dead to rights and I can hear cop sirens, I'm not risking my life or my family for some piece of shit.

The county I live in is so strapped for cash that unless you purposely kill someone to make a sexy skin suit, you will likely be released after arrest becuase the lockup is too expensive to operate.  yep, I'm better off killing the bad guys.

I'd wake up, realise that I live in a sleepy suburb in the nice part of Dublin and that it was all just a nightmare and then go back to sleep.

But in all seriousness I would probably only use lethal force as a last resort. Gun related deaths from break-ins are incredibly rare in Ireland and the chances of the burglars having firearms would be slim. I'd use the Hurling stick until circumstances demanded otherwise.

So where do I just magically acquire this gun from?

And when the situation arises I'll tell you what I did, but the likely hood of that is near enough to zero that I don't care.

thought for sure you would have fired a bazooka up his ass before he could breath for the second time in your home.

Just so you know, here in Florida just pointing your gun at someone constitutes deadly force.  If I decided to use my gun, I'm going for center of mass.

There was a case of a burglar breaking into a house's skylight.  He fell through the skylight and landed on the kitchen counter which had a stack of knives on it.  He landed square on these knives which stuck him pretty badly.  He sued and won for damages.

screw the wounding crap...aim for the head.  if they are still alive they can sue you.

myself, i have 3 attack cats that will put the hurt on any unwelcome intruders.

Lethal. I don't want to risk my life or my family's life just because some asshole decided to break in to my house. You don't wanna die? DON'T FUCKING BREAK INTO PEOPLE'S HOMES.

Secondly, if you only injure them they CAN try to sue you for injuries. Yes, that's right your honor, my client is no longer able to perform his job (AKA theft and robbery and breaking 'n' entering) because THIS man shot him ... fuck that.

That and it avoids a lot of legal stuff, like them suing you.

Since I don't have $40k for a civil defense, i'd do my best to not use lethal force..and may try to avoid it all together..yes, even in my own home.  If I killed someone threatening me or my family in my home, it'd have to be at the point of no return for sure..sadly.  If I lived in a free state, I'd practice failure drills on the intruder till he's gone from this world with little regret.

Non-lethal as I'm not sure as I can bring myself to kill someone. If I only hurt them I can get roughly the same effect without facing such a moral dilemma. Also I wouldn't want to be known as "that guy" who killed some one.

More pragmatically, blood is a bitch to clean up.

Docta raises a good point. I can speak all I want on here; but whether or not I'd bring myself to do it if this situation was ever realized is another thing. Hopefully I'd be able to do whatever is necessary to protect myself and my loved ones.
