I see this and I have to ask myself - if the violence is down in Iraq and things are getting better according to republicans and the Iraqi army is capable of pushing out almost all of Al Qaeda (see Kmarion's thread) - why aren't we focused there (in Afghanistan)? That's where Bin Laden is. That's where Al-Zawahiri is (well, along the border of Pakistan and the US, atleast). Yet we're still in Iraq and haven't even bother making a troop shift to Afghanistan where the Taliban are making a strong resurgence? I just don't get that.

I saw something on Yahoo! the other day about Bush having a surge in Afghanistan, but aren't our forces just a bit pushed to the brink right now?

Because there's no oil in Afghanistan. Obviously. Afghanistan is a larger country than Iraq yet it contains a fraction of the troops and a fraction of the drive to rebuild. Like I said: oil.

Maybe the administration learned its lesson when it shifted attention from Afghanistan to Iraq.

Afghanistan is less dense in terms of population to Iraq, more spread out apart from the major centres, more mountains.

In terms of re-development, it must be going somewhere because they wouldn't set plans for this,

I thought this was obvious the last seven years or so. They do NOT want to catch them.

52,700 NATO troops in a country almost 1.5 times the size of Iraq. Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri are somewhere either in Afghanistan or Northwest Frontier province in Pakistan. Instead of trying to get them, there are instead 177,000 coalition troops stationed in Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and had not sponsored terrorism against the US, the UK or any of the other protagonists. Something doesn't make sense here. Why doesn't Afghanistan get 60 or 70 thousand of the Iraq-based troops so that Osama can be finished off?

I see nothing wrong with it if its improving their way of life, Kabul already has some more modern areas and systems in place.

It struck me as an odd target, unless of course they're found to be, or the attack is claimed by Pakistani rebels, which could lead to an issue between India and Pakistan again.

Let the baddies blow up the pipeline (unocal) going through it, and we'll refocus efforts there.

As for turrists..they're in Pakistan now..so a double negative for refocusing in Afghanistan.  The bad guy GOT AWAY.  Yep, no "smokin' him out of his hole" or "caught, dead or alive" or whatever other tough guy slogans came to pass.  Just ineptitude all around since 9/12/01.
