In talks with Mr Fitzgibbon in Washington last week, Mr Gates confirmed that the review of the F-22 was under way and that the future of the Raptor's production would be determined by the next administration in Washington.
This came as a suprise to me as I thought the F22 was very new and pretty much the best Fighter Jet in the world. Soaring maintenance costs in the F-22 program have prompted a review of the fighter's future production status.

Personally I dont think the next administration would scrap the program, but a lot of people on the forums have some experience with Defence ( especially the Air Force), what do you think?

They're not scrapping it, I just think they've realised that they have enough for now (that's the general gist i'm getting from this article). Maybe in 5 years time they'll start again, this plane is already miles ahead of anything else

Actually you are right, scrapping sounds a bit too severe. I guess they have enough F22's in the system to dominate airspace without needing more.

The debate within the US DoD is about keeping the production line open past the current run of 183 jets. The decision the next administration is going to have to make is whether to keep the line open or close it. Closing the production line makes buying any more basically fiscally impossible due to start-up costs to re-start the line.

The cost of restarting the line would be negligible compared with the design and development costs.

Not quite "negligible", but certainly less. However, the R&D is a sunk cost at this point...restarting the line would be a new investment/cost.

I want to know when the Typhoon is finally going into service.

My dad makes the engines, says they've done thousands of engines but they don't have a clue where they're ending up.  The berk reckons there's a conspiracy behind them...

Typhoon already is in service, remember when the RAF had to go intercept some Russkie Tu-95 Bears off the coast. They used Typhoons for that

Depends on the angle the plane is flying at.

Well I don't see the need for any more since 1 of them can take on a whole squadron. It's an unbelieveable plane, if it was a girl I'd have sex with it. Ofcourse I liked the YF-23 a little better but I guess it's splitting hairs.

The Airforce and Gates are in a disagreement as to what the Airforce should acquire. Gates wants more, cheaper planes and UAVs that can be used in the current war on terror. The AirForce wants more, expensive planes and a few UAV's that can be used in the war on terror and a possible upcoming conflict with Russia/China.

Right now, the production line for the F22 is capped at 183 planes, that means they are more expensive to procure per plane then they would be in higher numbers. The price would drop per plane with more purchased. The AirForce says it needs 381 planes to fulfill its requirements for the replacement of the F15A, B, and C models as well as other interceptors. Generally, its turned into a shit flinging contest between the AirForce and Gate supporters.

Lol. Why more of those when you have the Stryker, which is quieter, faster, has the capability for multiple gun packages (can even put the Rheinmetall 120mm /L55 Tank Gun [M268 Tank Gun in the US Army] on it), and cheaper?

Cause the stryker can't take an RPG hit (without the cage).  Plus Wheeled vs Tracked, etc.  Bradley is also much better at multiple jobs without needing to completely redo the vehicle.

And 25 mike mike of love.
