The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Holy unimformative thread batman.
Current specs? Budget?
Current specs? Budget?
Xp2500(1.833ghz), 1 gig ram, and currently the pc has an Mx440.
Budget under 150$.

the ATI 3850 is the most powerful agp card... I am considering getting one for an agp system i have...

Catbox and Peter, you gotta realize that his processor is from 2003. A 3850 that is already limited by the AGP bus will be the most extreme overkill you could imagine, and a complete waste of money. The 512MB 7600GT you suggested, Peter, is also the DDR2 version. The 512 DDR2 version of the 7600GT actually performs worse than the 7600GS in a number of applications, and it'd (GT core) also be bottlenecked by his CPU.
AGP cards are really not worth buying new, at the moment, due to the extremely limited supply. I would recommend looking for one second-hand. If you definitly want a new one, I recommend something like this.

for about 150$ you can replace your whole system with an Am2 system.

Sounds like a plan, but that card isn't worth more than the PCB it's printed on, let alone $40.The#1Spot wrote:

For $5 more, he can get a card that's 40% faster: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814121095The#1Spot wrote:

The DDR2 8600GT is worthless.

I heard somewhere that the DDR3 version is actually better than the 8800GS but I guess that would be somewhat extreme.Freezer7Pro wrote:

I'll state it again though, I read in a recent article that all of the 8-series with the exception of the 8800s will die very soon in their life because nVidia uses shitty materials that don't tolerate heat cycling very well so you should just avoid them completely and either get an 8800 or something older or newer.
all he said was that he wanted a card that wouldn't bottleneck his proc... and the 3850 sure won't do that...lolFreezer7Pro wrote:

I did notice the older proc spec in his post... but he didn't ask about a proc replacement...
my real recommendation is to save up and spend about 800-1000 on a current system

The 8600 cards have a problem with heat cycling, but that isn't a concern, as the conditions won't be so extreme. It's mainly laptop chips that go to 100C and back to 20 in a matter of minutes that will have problems._j5689_ wrote:
